Do you like wasabi?

Have you ever tried it before?
We sell some in the deli department. It comes like a mustard but it's green. The first bite takes your breath away and you can feel it through your sinuses but it's only that first bite that stops you in your tracks, for me at least.
We also sell it in the Asian section of world foods at my store and with every bite you feel it through your sinuses. I like it with swiss cheese and roast beef. I don't use bread but I put a skinny strip down the center of my roast beef which is on top of the cheese and I roll it up and eat it that way
In the last few years I discovered wasabi trail mix and I buy that periodically. Recently when I eat the trail mix it bothers my tongue. Someone thought maybe it was burning my taste buds, I don't know but my tongue hurts several days after eating it
I'm in a quandary whether to buy it again or not. Maybe I should give my tongue a break for a bit.
Do you use wasabi in any form? If so on what? Do you like it or no?

It's a condiment and used more in Asian countries I think although theirs might be hotter yet.

@kobesbuddy yes you're right about that. I like horseradish too although I don't eat that much. Mainly I put it into my deviled eggs at Easter time.

@marlina it tastes a lot like horseradish, which I don't like.

I tried it before. If I'm not mistaken, I've only tasted twice.

So what did you think? You must not have cared for it much or you might have had it more often?

I tried wasabi and couldn't even swallow it. Nope, I don't like it at all.

I like certain things hot if there's also a flavor to them, normally.

@RubyHawk this is a special kind of heat. As my taste buds weren't bothered until recently I'm either having to much of it or it's the Sriracha flavored cashews that are the culprit.

I like wasabi, have bought items with wasabi. One was peas,
toooo hot. Wasabi sit mix sauce for fresh fish, good. Mild wasabi rice cakes, nice & mild, was good. I'll make a mix of soy sauce and wasabi paste from tube, for raw fish, it's mild, so nice. As long as wasabi mild I'll like it. Trouble is it's buy and experiment, to know how mild, or not

I don't think we sell it with a paste but I could try mixing soy sauce with some from the jar of wasabi to tone down the taste a little. Not sure why I didn't think of that since I've purchased almonds that has both wasabi and soy sauce on them and those were very good.

@oahuwriter I wouldn't want to mellow out our completely. Just a little bit maybe. It I could buy the condiment that's only hour with the first bite but that might not have the medicinal qualities.

Yes, wasabi mixed really makes it mellow. Today, with my homemade won ton, I added ginger & garlic, you know the ones minced comes in jar, it was yummy & made wasabi mellow too.

I don't know what it's made out of or whether it's healthy or not.
I guess it comes from a plant and the roots are made into a paste and it has at least ten health benefits such as reducing inflammation, helping heal arthritis, helps with weight loss and sinus problems to name a few

When I tried it as Wasabi peas, I did not care for it. Besides the sharp heat, I found it bitter. It is even more potent than horseradish and I am sure if you have a sinus problem it will clear it up. In the trail mix it may be a preservative that is hurting your tongue, or something else. I would not skip the wasabi un-sandwich, but would hold off of the trail mix. In Asian restaurants Wasabi is often served as a condiment with sushi.

I never found it to be bitter although since it's been years since I've had the peas I don't remember if those were bitter or not.
I decided to take a break from the trail mix which also has srichia on some of the nuts and that could be what's affecting my tongue.

Yes, but a little bit goes a long way. I usually have it with sushi. I tried some wasabi peas once, they were way too hot for me.

I've not had wasabi peas for many years maybe those are now to hot for me too. When I eat the condiment on my meat I don't put much on. That would make it easy to hot for me too.

I LOVE wasabi--I tend to use a lot of it with sushi--and it makes my head feel like it is going to explode--in a good way--I eat the wasabi peas as well--enjoy!

It might help your breathing issues from your apartment too.

@MarshaMusselman - I prepare sushi time by time at home. I use smoked salmon or cooked shrimps instead of raw fish because I do not want to get sick with raw fish.

I don't eat hot peppers and many other hot things like sauces. It could be that because it's similar in hotness to horseradish that I like it because I was brought up on horseradish.
Something in the trail mix has Sriracha on it and it could be that which seems to be bothering my tongue.

I guess some of the wasabi sold in the states is horseradish with green food coloring.
We sell both kinds. I like both although even though the Japanese version is felt through the sinus cavities on every bite I've not found it to clear them up long term.
Supposedly it has other healing benefits like antioxidants.

@porwest I agree and I was surprised when I tried the version found in the world foods that the heat could be felt with every bite.

@MarshaMusselman That would seem wrong to do that. Wasabi and horseradish are in the same family but not the same thing.

I can't eat really hot stuff like wasabi peas. I did try them when they started becoming so popular. My mouth burned all day and night and my lips were swollen. Nope, nope. You can have my share!

I may refrain from the peas too and I'll be staying away from the wasabi bits for a bit as well since my tongue still hurts a bit. But it could also be from the srichia nuts included in the mix.

Have you had any wasabi before? One of the gals here says there's more kick in the peas than other things.
