Sexy Garbage Cans?

Maybe it is a good idea, maybe it is not. In the city of Malmo in Sweden they have installed garbage bins with sexy, alluring responses when you toss your garbage into them. According to city officials this is to encourage people to dump their garbage and not litter, and get a little laugh while doing so. On the surface it is a good idea. It's novel, right? But what happens when the novelty wears off? Will this idea do anything to actually solve the problem of littering? Likely no. After the novelty wears off people will simply be like, "Been there, done that." While I of course encourage and applaud the idea and strongly despise littering, it is simply something that will invariably cost more money and not solve any real problems. In the end they will simply be empty garbage cans that serve no purpose—unless the cans can somehow develop a habit and an awareness. But even that will wear off eventually.

I wonder if they have a plan to update the cans with new comments every so often to encourage people to continue to properly dispose of their trash.

That is a good idea. I wonder if the comments will be suitable for all audiences like kids.

@DWDavis Maybe that would be something to "continue the usefulness?" If they change the messages maybe people would be encouraged to see what new racy thing the garbage can might say? I wonder if the messages are gender geared? In other words, are men more prone to litter? Because it would seem the men would be most apt to not only hear the messages, but be juvenile enough to enjoy them. lol

@akalinus I hadn't thought of the kids. Egads. Because one of the messages noted in the article was, "touch me there again." How do you explain THAT to a kid? lol

Just throw your garbage away. Another gimmick.

Agreed, and also another example of politicians simply feeling like they are doing something and giving the impression without addressing the underlying issue of why people litter in the first place, and maybe even stiffening fines for littering and better policing it.

@CarolDM Isn't that the truth. Maybe they have less problems in Sweden? I mean, they don't have Biden of course. lol

That sounds trashy . It's a funny thought for about 2 seconds, but it doesn't help the litter issue in the long run.

@porwest How about every single person be responsible for their own trash . . . what an obvious concept that people don't seem to get.

@much2say Such is life. As I often like to say, "People are neat." Of course, in this context, that's an oxymoron.

It might be fun for awhile getting a sexy message while dumping litter. I'm curious about what those cans say

According to the article they say things like, "Hmm, yeah...that was crazy good," "oh, right there, yes!" Apparently the person voicing the cans is a "famous person," but has chosen to remain anyonymous. I guess she doesn't want to litter her reputation or have her career go into the trash. lol

@Marilynda1225 On the surface, no. From what I have read it's suggestive, but not particularly racy.

That is a novel idea. It is good for a laugh or two. Maybe I would keep throwing in litter just to hear all the phrases. I think people will get a kick out of it.

@porwest I think you are right. And they will probably stop working in short order if people find out where the recorder is and abuse it in some way.

The effect of this kind of gimmick will only be short term. If littering is really serious in the city, education and introducing a fine may be required.

Fines are the direction I would be going. Make the fine so large as to really cause someone to think twice before tossing their garbage into the street.

@JudyEv Huge fines are one way. Even fines don't always work, of course. The fine in the U.S. for littering is $500 but people still do it. And of course there is little policing of it.

It would be interesting to revisit this a year later and see if there was a reduction in litter as a result, and then see if the trend increased or decreased in year two.
