Tuesday Morning Musings

Well, howdy! I’m at the car dealership. Maintenance alerts called to me while I was in South Carolina, so now is the time for more money to be spent on the m-m-m-m-motor vehicle. God willing I’ll get that sucker paid off this year. It used to be fun to go to the dealership to get the car serviced, because I could spend time looking at the new cars. Now, it’s looking at a lot of empty space on the lot. They do have a not-for-sale 2023 HR-V. I used to have an HR-V, and I’ll tell you flat out I’m not impressed with the new model. They did away with the “magic seats” (the back seats folded UP as well as down, allowing for tall items to be placed on the floor). The gas mileage has tanked (pardon the pun), too: the sticker on the window said 28/30. I never got mileage that low in my HR-V. In fact, I averaged about 35 MPG on my trip last week in a CR-V. To tell you the truth, I have my suspicions. There were tons of cars parked at the docks at Charleston that I saw on the ferry ride out to Fort Sumter. You know the saying, “follow the money.” My car was sticker priced at $31,000 or so when I bought it two years ago. Since I bought it during the pandemic I got it for $17,900. In other words, I don’t think there’s a “shortage of cars” as much as a “beneficial time to make up those profits lost during the pandemic.” When the restaurant across the street opens I’ll walk over there and have lunch. After the work is done I’ll probably go to the grocery. For you two people desperately waiting for more music countdowns fear not. I’m working on finalizing the 40-year-old song list for next month. You’ll be amazed at some of the songs that hit “middle age” this year! Then I’ll do the fifty-year-old songs, and that’ll really shock you. Or make you feel old, whichever. My brother is putting new gutters on his house. All of the work he’s doing makes me glad I call people for it. He built the steps on my back porch, and that was intense. He’s no spring chicken anymore, either, but he enjoys doing the work….for now. I expect a text from him any day that says something along the lines of “(Navy cuss words), I’m calling a contractor.” Y’all have a good’n! I think motor vehicle owners all have a love, hate relationship with their cars and the maintenance that goes along with them.

@snowy22315 - my sis-in-law has one of those RAV4s with the swing-open rear door instead of the hatchback.

That’s true. Hondas are very reliable, so I have little to complain about. Actually, I think any car that is maintained (regular oil changes, etc.) will have few problems (except Fords, of course ).

We have a friend whose window looks out over the harbour. New cars line up in their thousands there yet people still have to wait 6-8 months for their particular choice. I don't know where all the new cars go but there must be hundreds of buyers.

They say the plug-in hybrids have as much as a two year waiting period for some models in the U.S.

@FourWalls Our friend just bought a hybrid after waiting about 8 months but when it's running on petrol, it's charging the battery so she never has to plug it in. However, I guess that means she can't run out of petrol!

Don't know nothing about the m m motor vehicle, What's next on the music agenda? You're talking about house repairs so how about songs about houses or cars or even trains just saying, You might have already down some of them,

Up in July will be the 1982 songs to follow the earlier look at 1962 songs….then the 50-year-old songs in August.

The 1982 countdown is primarily designed to make the kids feel old.

Seems the parts are what the problem is. I have a friend that bought a 2022 vehicle and she does not have all of the parts, they will ship later. I told her she was insane to do this. She may never get those parts from China. Enjoy yours too.

Nothing too terrible. One of the technicians was on the phone with a guy whose A/C had been ruined by some “Joe’s Pool Hall and Car Repair” person putting the wrong coolant in the car. THAT is why I take the car to a Honda dealership. Yes, I’m probably paying 10% more, but that won’t happen.

My brother did most of the work on our house that we're going to rent himself. It looks good to me, though I know he said he left a couple of things that weren't to his standards.

My brother put a big ol’ honkin’ dent in his arm when one of the rotted boards fell. Another reason to hire someone.

The first of July is the first day of the fiscal year in many states, and many have automatic gas tax “adjustment” laws. Maryland, for instance, gets 6c more per gallon starting tomorrow, and nobody did anything except pass a law nine years ago. And the idea of a gas tax holiday will never make it through Congress. Politicians don’t lower taxes, they only raise them.

If you don't know much about a car, it's a hustle I say. Where I am from I hear they move some part and resell them

Cars are a necessary evil in America. Most of our public transportation has gone the way of the dinosaur or is dangerous (we’ve had two fatal train derailments in four days).

Looking at many car lots—although it is getting better—I have never in my life ever seen them so empty. So, I think the shortage was real. Of course it was on both sides, new and used, since less new cars were made due to the supply chain problems and production shut downs, and of course less new cars sold means less used cars traded and thus, the rest is history. Hope the repair or maintenance bill wasn't too hefty. But then, what isn't these days?
