Much too much

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I have much too much of pretty much everything. Nothing like trying to get a house for sale to realize how much crap you really own. Also, I am always fighting with myself about getting rid of things. For instance I have two hammers. One is a heavy duty carpenters hammer and the other is more of an everyday hammer. I don't use either of them very often, but the moment I get rid of it, I feel like I will need it..sigh..one should be enough. Also, I was about to get rid of a black blazer the other day but I thought hey this is useful. I mean it has seen better days, but still if I go to replace it is going to be expensive. I kept it. I still don't know what to do with the hammers though. Maybe someone would buy one. I dont know..

And that's why, when we had to move four years ago I put in a lot of overtime and let Pretty sort through all our stuff. She threw away or donated stuff I would have kept . So far, we've only replaced a small amount of the stuff she got rid of...

@paigea That's true. We had 2 weeks to find a house and get moved when our previous landlord passed away and the house we had rented for over 22 years was sold. The new owner even offered to loan us his pickup, if we needed it. Thankfully, our next-door neighbor there came to the rescue and helped us move after Pretty had sort everything out.

@58lordstreet Maybe I should "accidentally: break some things."

I have this really neat looking hand crafted mug that I broke a couple of pieces out of almost as soon as I got it. I lost the pieces, but would you believe I still have the mug? I guess I think the elves are going to come up with the pieces.

yes I have to break anything I get rid of otherwise I wake up in a sweat and find myself in the bins looking for the thing I threw out

Seems that's how it tends to work... The moment we throw something out we end up needing it.
I have bags of clothes that no longer fit me or I don't like. I have to look them over again and donate everything. They're taking up room in one of the bedrooms.

You should see my walk in. And why in the heck did I think I needed so many mugs?

@snowy22315 Our garage is like a junk yard. A lot of stuff needs to go. Like the old dishwasher previous tenants left in our garage.

Maybe you could have a quick garage sale. That's what I've done a lot before moving.

The problem is I am way back off the main road. The only people who come through here are the few that live on the end of the street. However, there is a flea market that allows people to set up on their tables for a fee. I may do that.

YOu simply can't keep everything though. The main rule of house selling it decluttering, and if I get to move it will almost certainly be to a smaller place, so I wouldn't want to take it all anyway.

I have a problem with stuff too! Especially books and to a lesser extent clothing. Me and my stuff have a live hate relationship! Oh, and Christmas decorations. Yipes!

@snowy22315 For me it's books, clothes, art/craft supplies, oh lots of stuff. Definitely the holiday decorations too . . . we have big plastic crates for all of 'em!

I have been working on this for awhile, but obviously not hard enough. Alot of this stuff is kind of heavy and I need to make sure I don't hurt my back. I think I am going to try to get nephew to come down sometime next month and assist.

@snowy22315 Its hard to even just get started on such a huge project, once you start there is no turning back.

I know exactly how you feel. I also have 2 hammers (one big and heavy and one lighter weight). Both are in a tool box in the garage along with other various tools I hardly ever use.
It's really hard to get rid of things that basically still are useful. Good luck with your downsizing

I've known for several years that I have to much stuff and some years back I began getting rid of some of it. But that is a chore in and of itself. I hope I'm in good shape once I retire to make more progress. I don't want my kids to have to go through my crap once I'm gone and they'd probably just throw a lot of it away anyway.
I know what your mean getting rid of things though especially clothing. I have more than I need of that too since I work in a store that sells clothes.
I'm slowly going through things I boxed up before the kitchen remodel, and I am putting things I'm sure I'll never use again in a box.
I didn't realize you were selling your house. So you know where you might move to next?

Yes, but first it has to be sold for enough to make that practical. When I meet with the realtor if she doesn't feel it could be listed for what I want for it, I will find out what I need to do. Hopefully it will still sell for more than I paid for it though

@MarshaMusselman The market for sellers seems like it has gone bust here, but I did notice one house for sale in this community, that was on the market a very short time. So, they are selling. I guess it depends on a variety of factors. I will only sell for a decent offer though.

I would keep the current hammers since the day you get rid of a hammer, you will probably be needing it for a special project inside of your home.

@snowy22315 - a basic set of tools for the home is good to have around. or else youll be using spoons as shovels, knives as screwdrivers , rollers as hammers , tongs as nail pullers and so on.

Me too. I have too many stuff in my apartment, mainly clothes and books. I donate my clothes to Salvation Army every year. For books, I usually participate in the used book sales events organized by the Management Office of my apartment.
