Do Your Pets Do This? Had To Buy A Covered One.

I prefer a coverless one, but the cat keeps toppling it over at night so we wake up to spilled trash next to the computer table. Good thing it's just "dry" trash like crumpled paper, snack packets, medicine foil, etc. so nothing messy. She doesn't eat people food and doesn't play with anything in it, so I have no idea why she puts her paws on the rim and sniffs around until it tips over because of her weight. I like that this waste bin opens two ways, from the top and when stepping on the pedal. (Please refresh the page if you don't see it.) Do your pets also mess with your trash bins?

No, my fishies have never toppled the trash can over. Maybe they can't figure out how to wrap their little fins around the top of the trashcan?

Keep the trash in the aquarium and check if they do it or not.

@DaddyEvil but they won't go out of the aquarium as they know it will kill them so better to keep trash in there

@sjvg1976 No! Pretty would put enough stuff in there that the fishies would climb out of the aquarium!

I don't have a pet here but I think the cats are curious and they like to touch everything in the house.

I guess she's checking if there's something new that wasn't there the night before.

@merrybelle2021 that's the problem with the cats, they are very curious.

@sjvg1976 And they're more agile than dogs so they can get into places they're not supposed to.

I used to have a dog and when he was still a puppy, he loves to play with our trash can. That`s why I put out our trash can from then on

Did your puppy outgrow this habit when he got older?

My trash bin has a very heavy cover. Cats cannot open it.

We have several inside and outside the house, different sizes for different kinds of trash.

One of my dogs does this and it is not a good thing at all.

How did you make the dog stop? Maybe buying one with a sealed/locked lid would help?

My two cats have never played with our trash cans. It is rare for them to get into anything.

We don't keep our bins exposed, because we can't be sure what our cats will do. They don't appear to be food originated, but they do like certain things. So for safety, we don't keep them exposed. Cats get curious, and your cat thinks she's attacking the bin.

@porwest Precious did that once, knock over the main trash bin. That day we learned, no fried chicken remains allowed in the house.

Ours will knock over the garbage cans in the bathrooms, but we've never had any issue with them getting into the main garbage can in the kitchen. It is covered, though.

We don't have pets of our own but the trash bin outside gets messy because of the neighbor's cats.

We have cat trespassers, too, so I only take out the kitchen trash (food scraps) on the day of pick-up.

Cats are naturally curious and they have a very good sense of smell. They smell food and they want to check if there is inside something they would enjoy to eat.

Ours in the kitchen is covered and lifts with a handy foot pedal. So far (knock on wood) we haven't encountered any issues with the cats getting into it.

My cats have never done that. Our kitchen trash can broke and we got a new one with a cover.

Nope. Chika the Lab don't trash the bins because cuzzy will scold him.
