Our 'new-look' backyard

I wrote that we took out a tree from our miniscule backyard. We’ve put a frangipani in its place and also moved another big pot plant which will be more out of the way in its new position. That’s the plant on the right. You can see part of the birdbath which hasn’t been reinstalled yet. And you can also see how close the next door’s house is. I might take out some of the other plants too as they are not particularly attractive. I don’t know what they are but they show no signs of flowering. The middle two rows of plants are miniature something-or-others. I can’t remember the name at the moment but no doubt it will come to me later.

Looks great! You have your own backyard. Have you considered planting veggies?

Your backyard looks very neat ! I have seen the frangipani in South China.Their flowers' colour consists of white and yellow ,which looks like egg white and egg yolk.

@JudyEv Oh, yeah! You have to find just the right plants and make sure they won't overgrow the area.

Thanks. We have a bit more work to do yet. A small area is nearly as big a problem as a large one.

Lately, names of people and things just go straight out of my head. I'll wake up about 4am and the name of these plants will hit me.

I have no idea how your backyard looked before. But your mini garden looks neat and nice. I think the dried leaves are fine to be left there are they also act as fertilizer to them as well.

@JudyEv Oh that looks nice with the tree but I guess it needs a bigger space to grow and might be troubling your neighbor already

Here is the area a week ago before we took out a tree. The roots were impacting on the neighbour's paving bricks.

@JudyEv our village/subdivision here has houses of the same color, design, all. Except those who already altered the outside paints. So if I miss the street name, I could enter the wrong house anytime.

@jobelbojel Once, every Australian house seemed a bit different but now there are a lot that are all built alike. We noticed it especially in Ireland but there they paint each front door a different colour. Otherwise, I'm sure they'd go to the wrong house sometimes.

There are around 120 houses in this gated area and they are all quite similar.

That looks smaller than my back garden and I live in a tiny house. I would have thought you lived somewhere that had gardens the size and grandeur of something Capability Brown designed. Having said that it does look a lot tidier than mine.

@JudyEv Ah right. I didn't realise you'd moved. That'll teach me to disappear for a year. How's it going? Getting used to not being lord and lady of the manor?

@WorDazza We've actually been here since May 12 months ago so that must be how long you've been away from myLot. I know we needed to leave there at some stage and there are lots of good things about this place but it's very different. It sounds very ungrateful not to be pleased to have a brand new house and less work but there are no kangaroos, no birds and no space.

We used to have 18 acres but not of garden. Now we've moved to a 'gated retirement village' as befitting our age.

@JudyEv I think I would add some splotches of color. Next year when it is cool, you could even add some purple cabbages. A japanese bonsai would look really nice in there too.

@JudyEv Boy, I'm feeling that now . We came from no garden at the apartments to a house with a yard . . . and I only really started doing real yardwork in the past few years - it's not a simple task.

Ooh I like it. Is the birdbath the thing to the right of the wooden stool. I love it! Looks like you are doing great with the limited space you have in your backyard. We just had a discussion today about doing our flower beds up front.

@JudyEv I really like it. We looked at bird bath the other day when I got seeds and potting soil. They were all cartoon-y and not my style. They had Disney characters on them. I've always wanted a bird bath.
