Seven years ago - look where we were!

Around this time seven years ago, we were touring France and Germany in our motor-home. We were somewhere near Alsace/Lorraine and chanced upon a war cemetery in the middle of nowhere or so it seemed to us. I wrote about it at the time and included a slideshow on that discussion. You can catch up here if you want to: https://www.mylot.com/post/2867262/we-stumble-across-our-first-war-cemetery There was an inscription which read, “To the memory of 2344 Rumanian prisoners of war who died in German internment camps in Alsace and Lorraine in 1917 and 1918, to the memory of the people of Alsace and Lorraine who helped them to survive.” The image lower right says it’s the resting place of an unknown soldier buried at/in Koestzingen. I couldn’t find out anything about Koestzingen. Top left is our motor-home and just look at that view! Top right is one of the spectacular houses that caught my eye at the time. How pleased I am now to have these photos to look back on.

France was a good place to visit. I wonder if it is now.

@JudyEv Me neither. If I ever go back to Europe it would be to Spain where my grandson lives.

You have some wonderful memories of touring and taking photos. You and Vince will be doing more touring this coming summer (or winter), won't you?

@JudyEv Wait! I know you and Vince are both 21. How can you have sons that live elsewhere?

We'll probably stick to touring within our own state. There is plenty to see here and we're not getting any younger. At the moment, we're thinking of flying to Melbourne for Christmas to spend few days with our son. Then next year sometime, maybe getting to Ireland to visit the other son.

These are really good memories. Recently I have not seen your posts related to a tour. Maybe you're not touring these days now.

@sjvg1976 We might fly to Melbourne at Christmas to spend it with our son then try to get to Ireland next year to see the other son. Just at the moment, flying anywhere is fraught with dangers. Lots of luggage is going missing and flights are cancelled because of lack of staff.

Covid stopped our travels. Our state was cut off from the rest of Australia and we didn't want to go to the east then not be able to get home.

I miss the Alsace, it is beautiful. I remember you wrote about your long journey in France and Germany when you came back.

@JudyEv - You are right. I used to write a daily diary when we traveled and, little by little, I am typing the diaries in text files in my computer and I add some photos that I scan. Back in time we had no digital camera.

Yes, I wrote lots of posts about what we'd seen. I'm glad I did as at least I have those records of it.

@LadyDuck That's a good idea. I'm beginning to think I could consolidate all my travel posts into one document.

@Ronrybs I'm sure it would have come as a surprise. And somewhere around Pozieres, there is a cemetery devoted to the 8th and 9th battalions of the Devonshire Regiment. On 4th July, 160 officers and men were buried in the same trench they had held against atrocious odds. I wrote about it in 2016:
In August 2015 we were travelling through France in our motor-home. We were heading for Pozieres and Villiers-Bretonneux, visiting war sites and cemeteries....

@JudyEv A long way from home. When I was researching the Necropolis Railway, I found, at Brookwood cemetery in Surrey, the only US Coast Guard cemetery in Europe. It dated from WWI

We bought it second-hand and knew we'd be able to sell it again without losing too much money. As it was we got back all our money. It's too long to tell here but you can read about it on this post:
After we bought the motor-home in Ireland (catch up here: https://www.mylot.com/post/3383236/the-time-we-bought-a-motor-home-in-ireland) we spent some time in...

Photos do help us remember the good times. I wonder if I'll ever do anything with my really old photos of I ever find them again. I know some are in a shoe box under the bed.

What we had taken for granted is not the reality now what with the mess created by the virus and the ongoing war that casts a pall of gloom over those who want peace. International travel is not for the faint of heart now.
