A Surprise Discovery.

My nephew had no idea that his iron level was low until he went to donate blood for someone he knew. He was told he couldn't because of low iron in his blood, and would have to get the levels up before he could donate. My nephew is a very active person. In his sparetime he exercises , and recently started a building project behind his house. So l checked the causes for low iron and found that one of the causes could be vigorous exercise! - now that surprised me. If vigorous exercise is the reason for his low iron , it proves that nothing in excess is good - even exercise. Do you exercise often? Do you have any idea if your iron levels are normal? I have no idea about my iron levels. And I did not know exercise could cause them to drop. Well I guess if it is lots of exercise. Hope he can get his iron levels back up. Wonder what foods would be good for that. Glad he was able to find out about it Kandase.

I knew it couldn't be the other causes listed , like blood loss and pregnancy and no iron in the diet. He eats quite well though he sometimes fasts.

@Kandae11 It might be the fasting? Liver is good for iron I believe.

@RebeccasFarm. Yes liver, red meat and beans , raisins , currants and leafy greens are among the iron rich foods. I suspect the fasting and over active lifestyle contributed.

My iron levels are good. I get tested for a variety of things about once a month. (I gave two samples to doctors this week.) I hope vigorous exercise is his only problem.

@Kandae11 That's always a possibility. I love spinach and add it to almost everything I eat. YUMM!

He does quite a bit of fasting, and when he is not exercising he is building. He eats quite well, but maybe not enough foods with iron.

On my last check up my levels were good. A couple of years back it turned out I was Vitamin D deficient. So I have been topping up with a supplement and have been good since then

@Ronrybs Do you have a Desk job? That could explain the Vitamin D deficiency. Even I had it some 9 years back !

The supplements do help, he should get an iron supplement because he probably is not getting enough from his diet.

@aninditasen It will take time. I lost weight and kept it off by eating lots of fiber and omitting fatty foods and sugary drinks and pastries.

@Kandae11 It is folly to think that dieting will help lose weight. It is the exercise that helps but one must eat well while exercising.

Which is made worse if the diet is deficient.

I have always been told that lack of sleep can cause your iron level to go quite fast. Not only is my son exercising too much but he's hardly had any sleep at all because of playing games or reading novels. So yesterday, he actually passed out for a few minutes. He woke up lying on the floor and didn't even realize that he lost consciousness.

@Kandae11 I think we tend to forget how much we need to eat the right foods and nourish our bodies. I hope your nephew is able to get his iron levels up
@Kandae11 (57231)
28 Jul 22
Ha, ha. Same as with most of us. I think diet plays a part too. The body could be weakened if it isn't being fed the right nutrients - and vigorous exercise would make matters worse.

Your nephew will likely need to take iron injections to get his iron level up. Some diseases cause iron levels to drop so I hope he’s seeing a good doctor.

It comes as a shock to me that over exercising can cause the iron level to drop. Rightly said that excess of anything is not good. We might take enough of iron in our diet but still have iron deficiency if there is some underlying issues with absorption and assimilation of the same. Also, a deficiency of Vitamin C can be the cause for iron deficiency. We need vitamin C for a better iron absorption and assimilation.

Yes some people have a problem absorbing iron. You can be taking supplements, eating the right foods, but if your body is not absorbing the iron ........

@Kandae11 Yes. I read an article where they stated that most people have iron deficiency because they don't absorb it well. And many have Vitamin C deficiency.

Exercise can be a reason. If one exercises a lot and not have sufficient replacement nutrients, it can be quite possible! Key is to be moderate and cautious in everything!
