A Surprise Discovery.

My nephew had no idea that his iron level was low until he went to donate blood for someone he knew. He was told he couldn't because of low iron in his blood, and would have to get the levels up before he could donate.
My nephew is a very active person. In his sparetime he exercises , and recently started a building project behind his house.
So l checked the causes for low iron and found that one of the causes could be vigorous exercise! - now that surprised me.
If vigorous exercise is the reason for his low iron , it proves that nothing in excess is good - even exercise.
Do you exercise often? Do you have any idea if your iron levels are normal?

I have no idea about my iron levels.
And I did not know exercise could cause them to drop.
Well I guess if it is lots of exercise.
Hope he can get his iron levels back up.
Wonder what foods would be good for that. Glad he was able to find out about it Kandase.

@Kandae11 It might be the fasting? Liver is good for iron I believe.

@RebeccasFarm. Yes liver, red meat and beans , raisins , currants and leafy greens are among the iron rich foods. I suspect the fasting and over active lifestyle contributed.

My iron levels are good. I get tested for a variety of things about once a month. (I gave two samples to doctors this week.)
I hope vigorous exercise is his only problem.

@Kandae11 That's always a possibility. I love spinach and add it to almost everything I eat. YUMM!

Do you have a Desk job?
That could explain the Vitamin D deficiency.
Even I had it some 9 years back !

@aninditasen It will take time. I lost weight and kept it off by eating lots of fiber and omitting fatty foods and sugary drinks and pastries.

Even the song would agree to this. Too much of everything will kill us.

I suppose that could be true as it drains one's electrolytes.

@Kandae11 It is folly to think that dieting will help lose weight. It is the exercise that helps but one must eat well while exercising.

@allknowing. He is not on a diet . l meant he should include more iron rich foods like - beans, liver and leafy greens among the foods he eats.

I have always been told that lack of sleep can cause your iron level to go quite fast. Not only is my son exercising too much but he's hardly had any sleep at all because of playing games or reading novels. So yesterday, he actually passed out for a few minutes. He woke up lying on the floor and didn't even realize that he lost consciousness.

@Kandae11 Yes I am aware of it. My sister is a doctor, another sister is a nurse. Hubby's husband and sister are all nurses as well.

I did not know that vigorous exercise could cause low iron. See it's true..I learn something new here every day.
I just had my bloodwork done and my levels are okay. Of course "vigorous" exercise is not even in my vocabulary

@Kandae11 I think we tend to forget how much we need to eat the right foods and nourish our bodies. I hope your nephew is able to get his iron levels up

That's good that he found out. I have had terribly low iron due to my periods, but that's all over now.

It comes as a shock to me that over exercising can cause the iron level to drop. Rightly said that excess of anything is not good.
We might take enough of iron in our diet but still have iron deficiency if there is some underlying issues with absorption and assimilation of the same. Also, a deficiency of Vitamin C can be the cause for iron deficiency. We need vitamin C for a better iron absorption and assimilation.

@Kandae11 Yes. I read an article where they stated that most people have iron deficiency because they don't absorb it well. And many have Vitamin C deficiency.

Exercise can be a reason.
If one exercises a lot and not have sufficient replacement nutrients, it can be quite possible!
Key is to be moderate and cautious in everything!

That is a surprise for me too. I didn't know that is one of the causes. My exercise is only walking.
I hope that his level will go up so that he can donate.
