Have you had an MRI?

I just came out of an MRI machine (Magnetic resonance imaging) to check my back and hip for pain. Not sure if it's from arthritis or a pinched nerve or a crooked spine. Maybe some of all of it. I've felt it at times forever, but now I'm having numbness in one leg and foot. Hoping just a cortisone shot might help. Sure don't want surgery if at all possible. I'm still a little loopy from the pill I took for slight claustrophobia. But they now put a window in front of your face that feels like you're looking outside. It's a mirror of some sort, but you really believe you're looking at a live moving scene out doors. No claustrophobia at all! Virtual reality, I guess, but whatever works! If you ever need an MRI, be sure to ask about the window. You don't wear goggles like with VR games, you just lay there as you look out a clear window. I almost fell asleep! Now to get my 4th Covid shot soon (second booster.) Possibly having a partial intestinal obstruction, so waiting to see if I need to go to the ER before getting the shot. I'd really hate to be going through very possible side effects from the shot while dealing with the horrid NG tube from a blockage. I'm trying my best to space out these medical issues, but as many of you know personally, life and diseases don't always wait their turn. Best wishes and my most sincere prayers for all of you who are going through life's difficult and painful happenings. God is our very present help in time of need. And He promises to never leave us or forsake us.

Maybe I should tell them I am claustrophobic so I can get a little pill. Just kidding. Those MRI's are like jack hammers. I hope you get good results.

This was such a nice surprise with the "open window." I don't need the atavan if there's a next time. How's your progress going today?

@CarolDM Glad there's improvement, but be extra careful not to fall. I know you are.

@1creekgirl Just posted an update post. Start pain management next week. Still daily headaches but much better in intensity than before. I am feeling stronger finally. But still have to take it easy, lose my balance really easy.

Yes indeed they do not. Wishing you a speedy recovery. When it rains it pours as the saying goes but hopefully you are in for some sunny days. I’ve had an MRI 17 years ago. I fell and banged my head pretty bad so had to have it so they see if there was any permanent injury. I was lucky. No permanent injury and I was good as new after 2 years of physical therapy. I was 14 at the time and I remember it being very loud.

That was a terrible experience for you. When our grandson Nathan was 4, he had several MRI's and all kinds of tests before surgery to remove a tethered cord from his backbone. The surgery went really well, but one time a nurse bumped Nathan's head on the door as she carried him back to his room. Then he was supposed to be totally sedated for the MRI, but woke up in the middle of it. He was screaming in terror and pulled the iv tubes out, covered in blood.. It was such a horrifying experience for all of us, but especially our precious baby boy. Needless to say, he still has a fear of doctors and hospitals.

@1creekgirl that’s terrible. I’m so sorry your grandson had to go thru that. Traumatic experience indeed.

They're still pretty loud, but I wore ear plugs and listened to music.

I've had them before, and the hotels I've been in the window thing didn't exist. I put in ear plugs for the noise, but typically tended to zone out. They really don't bother me. Techs are pretty good about helping me transfer though.

I’ve had so many MRIs I’m surprised they haven’t named the room at the VA hospital after me. The first one was scary. I pray you don’t have to have surgery. I’m at the point in my life where if I have the option of pain or surgery, I’ll take the pain. My mom had two back surgeries and they didn’t help a whole lot (she complained about numbness in her legs and feet for the last 30 years of her life). My sis-in-law had back surgery last year and may need another surgery now. With all of the advances they’ve made (I have a friend who has a huge scar on her abdomen from her gallbladder removal, while I have four pock marks; and, in contrast, I have a big scar from my hysterectomy while they’re able to do that laparoscopically now!), back/spinal surgery is something that’s not progressed as far as the other surgeries have. It’s understandable, of course: mess up the spine or the back and the person is paralyzed. Anyway, see if lidocaine patches will help with your pain. I have sponylolisthesis and those patches usually keep me going. Much better than being doped up.

@1creekgirl —yes and no. You can get 4% patches OTC, but 5% patches are prescription.

I don't remember the name, but I once got checked for my chest, because a few years ago, I fainted in the student dorm bathroom and our housemate next door accompany me to the uni's clinic. They checked my chest, but I don't remember the name of the tool.

@1creekgirl Umm.. Not really. What I remember, is that I lay on something (ward bed something), then something put on my chest. I really don't remember what name is it already

I had an MRI one time, it was no noisy, I couldn't have slept in there if my life depended on it. I thought it was cool though they let you watch Netflix in it, although there was no sound..all I could hear was the crazy machine.

@1creekgirl What a horrible prospect, but I hope the MRI does help in trying to pinpoint the problem. Blockages not pleasant either. I feel for you having all this stuff going on. Praying.

I hope that the MRI will show what is going on with your back. Sorry to hear about the partial intestinal obstruction, I hope you don't have to be in the hospital long for that. Praying for you and your health issues.

Thanks so much. Dena. I'm doing all I can to prevent going to the hospital. The fear of that NG tube down my throat for several days will help me do whatever it takes!

Even though I knew I was in an enclosed tube and room, my mind knew I was looking at cars going by and trees swaying in the wind. Virtual reality, I guess.

I had an open MRI that is not as bad as the old tubes, also less noisy. I would wait to have the booster, if you need a procedure better to wait.

He was certainly right there with me. But the open window made me totally forget the tube I was in. I had no anxiety at all.
