Cheering on a West Australian endurance rider - 1,000 kms in ten days

My husband and I take photos at endurance horse-riding events and one of the regular riders is currently in Mongolia competing in Mongol Derby, a 1,000 km (621 mile) race across the Mongolia Steppe, and currently the longest horse-race in the world. The course recreates the ‘pony express’ system developed by Genghis Khan in 1224. The nomadic Mongols are a great horse-raising people and to own a lot of horses is seen as a sign of wealth. Horse-racing is a favourite pastime for the nomads. The small, tough horses are semi-wild and have changed little since the days of Genghis Khan. They live outdoors all year round, enduring winter temperatures of -40 °C (-40 °F) in winter to 30 °C (86 °F) in summer, and are given no supplementary feeding but forage for themselves on the steppes. The ride is held over ten days and involves 25 stages with the riders changing horses at each ‘station’. Forty-six riders are competing this year but often only half finish the event. Each horse does 40 km then the rider switches to a fresh mount. Riders and any gear they carry must weigh 85kg or less. They have the option of staying with local families or camping out. Horses are selected at each stage in consultation with the owners. Vets monitor the condition of the horses and time penalties are imposed if a rider pushes his/her mount too hard. I recognized the small Mongolian horse, they are strong horses, but 100 Km every day is a lot.

@JudyEv Do not worry, now I have very well understood, the horse is changed after 40 Km, but the riders does 100 Km.This is clear now.

And now I must have thoroughly confused you both @LadyDuck @Ronrybs as I put a thumbs up emoji instead of a thumbs down.

Sounds quite interesting! The Horses are indeed very tough. The conditions that they live in are similar to that of Yaks. Yet Yaks have a lot of wool and hair on them unlike these horses. A nice share!

This is an interesting event given that riders change horse in each stages. Do they own the horses they use at each stages for the said event?

@JudyEv Wow, the Mongols sounds like they really like training the horses.

The Mongol herders supply the horses. They train up 1500 horses for the 27 stations and the riders pick their own horses at each station.

@jobelbojel They have herds of horses, sheep and goats. I don't know what they do with them all. I guess out there they don't need much money as there isn't anyone around to buy the stock.

@Adie04 I'm not sure what you mean. The nomads use their horses all the time but they are often semi-wild and not keen about being ridden.

So true. We have an Easter marathon of three days of 80km but that's all on the one horse. These riders are doing ten days of 100km.

They are allowed ten days but it's actually a race. However, if they go too fast and put the horse at risk they are penalised. One guy had to wait 2 hours before he was allowed to carry on.

That is just fascinating and requires so much stamina, Actually I feel sorry for the poor horses but I guess they get used to it as time goes by,

Each horse only does 40km then the rider changes to a new horse. If the horse doesn't come in fit and healthy, the rider is penalised.

If the pony is doing anything more than a walk, the Mongols stand upright in the stirrups which would save a lot of bumping.

Yes, I did read that somewhere. The company that now runs the event also organises races in South America and across the Gobi Desert.

That is really interesting. I knew the Mongolians still lived as nomads but I didn't know they had the same kinds of events you've talked about. In the US we generally don't hear much about that country unless it's about that idjit hunter who kills beautiful rare animals.

This seems to be a very professionally run race now. The entry fee is huge. It used to be held once a year but there are at least several held each year now. I think the organisers are on to a money-making venture which is okay I guess.

These are really no more than ponies and have a very short, choppy stride. The Mongols ride standing upright in the stirrups if they travel at anything other than a walk.

To do 100 kms in a day would be tiring in itself but to do it ten days in a row would be very very gruelling.
