Well that was a first, roomie just asked me if I would like some "hog meat?" I said, what, like pickled pigs feet you mean? (That would be the day) Anyway, his uncle who is coming up here to help him move apparently was hunting for wild pigs( boar) in NC, and shot one. I am sure it is delicious, but have never had it, and I sure don't want a freezer full of it. I said maybe just a small piece like the size of a steak. It will be interesting to taste it.

Whatever he brings you, may I suggest you cook it over low heat for a long period of time? Cooking wild boar that way breaks down the tough muscle and makes it taste heavenly. Just use your favorite spices and let it take it's porky good time... YUMM!

@DaddyEvil I'll like it, as long as it doesn't taste gamey. Too bad, so sad for you. Guess you will have to find your own wild pig hook up...lol.

@RebeccasFarm No, he is going to an apartment program run by the local mental health center. It is more or less independent living, but staff does check in on them periodically.Of course they don't know he is planning on bringing an uninspected car.. I bet that will go over like a lead balloon.

I would think that kind of meat would be healthier than the pork you'd buy at the grocer, boars aren't fed chemicals or hormones to make them get plump.

@rebelann Yeah, I would think so...at least use some meat tenderizer or pound it or something.

I recall a friend of mine talking about deer and elk meat and how she had to marinate it before cooking it, I suppose the same is true for boar.

It is darker than the pork meat but the taste is very similar.

@LadyDuck They don't have that rule here that I know of, but where they process the meat I think they get a pretty good look at what's what.

Yes, I suspect so...being wild I think cooking it very well is really important to avoid Trichinosis.

@snowy22315 The hunters are obliged to have those animals checked by the vet before they can consume the meat.

I do like pork but have never had an opportunity (and probably never will) to try wild hog. Hope you enjoy what he brings

MysticPizza just posted about wild boar too and the problems they create for ranchers. I hope you get a small piece to try.

They can be destructive I think, and can also be dangerous. They have some not far from here supposedly. They live in a river basin area. I have no idea what the season is for them though. They seem confined to that one area, and don't venture out of it much.

I would love to try it. I bet it would be great smoked. I don't recommend eating skunk though. It tastes like it smells.

It would be very interesting to taste it, but I wouldn't know the first step in properly preparing and cooking wild boar.
