When Are You Going Camping?

That was the question our salesman, Gator, asked at least a half a dozen times. Perhaps more. "When are you going camping?" Not, "When are you planning on buying a camper?" I am sure it is a question that is designed to appeal to one's emotional sense rather than their rational sense. Camping sounds much more appealing than actually going through the process, the money, and buying a camper. The process was interesting. It's not that one can necessarily just walk into an RV store and browse. You sit down with a "matchmaker," and they determine what you are looking for and what kind of vehicle you have so they can determine what's the right fit and what you can pull. And then they kind of show you what they have that fits best. The sales pitch is pressure intense. Even though Gator said that was "not how we do business." He really wanted us to walk away with something in tow. I made it clear we were there for an education, not to buy anything today. I am not sure that quite sunk in, but that's what sales is, right? Get the customer to change his mind on the spot and convince him there is no time like the present to just pull the trigger and get it done. "Picture yourself lounging outside, delicious meat searing on the grill, a cold beer in hand," and so the story goes. "Yeah, Gator. I've pictured that already. Many times. It's why I am here today trying to get a feel for what is available and what I want and what is practical." I did learn a lot though, and so I think the entire "process" was at least productive and valuable. For me it is not really a question of IF I will own an RV. It is a question of WHEN. But I wanted to know what I could get and what my options were for the floor plan and features I prefer. I figured out that I could get pretty much what I want for under $50k. That's a 39' pull behind with double slide outs. The motor homes were nice. But even at $100k they felt cramped and I don't think we would like them at all. Not unless we could spring for a bus. But that's not for today. Now I have to number crunch. How much would I spend on insurance, maintenance, storage and other things? Those are important considerations. How often do I plan to use it? That's also important. How much will I spend to park it on trips? In that way I can come up with an annual estimate on total cost out of pocket per year, which helps me to better determine whether it works and exactly how much I need to have to do it. As is always the case, I don't intend to pay for it directly. The stock market will. So, knowing exactly what I need will tell me exactly where to get the money from to do it. I have to say it was fun looking around. But I will admit that I wonder, because of the way they do it, how much I did NOT see that maybe I would have liked to? But they have my information, and I will keep in touch with Gator. I told him to let me know if anything shows up on his lot that fits what I described as my "wish list," and we will go from there. When am I going camping? I have no idea. But the ball is rolling, that I DO know.

It is inevitable and practically a done deal. YES. I am getting an RV. Probably next spring. Just have to hammer out the details, but I think the decision has quite been made. Just have to wait, really, for the right one to come along that has everything I want. It is happening.

Mostly, they'll let you walk around looking at various rigs here. The slide-outs are getting more and more popular here.

@porwest They sometimes have camping expos here and then you can get to look at a number of options and ideas, all to do with camping and/or caravannng.

Most of the the RV stores I have ever been to are gated. I guess there is a reason for it. But it does, I think, make the shopping experience a little less fun. For me, at least. I'd rather be able to just roam around on my own and get a chance to look at and compare everything they have rather than just get shown this thing or that thing. I mean, if I point something out they of course will show you. But it still feels a bit restrained.

@JudyEv They do that here too. In fact, this upcoming weekend they are doing one at the Family Arena in St. Louis. We might go.

My camping days are behind me. I didn't care much for it as a kid. I am thankful for having tried it. But, I wish you the best when you do go.

@kaylachan They are really nice now. Literally like little apartments. The ones like the one I want, with the double slide outs are quite roomy.

Well, when I was a kid camping was very different. Tents and that sort of thing. Certainly that kind of camping is not for me. But an RV? Yeah. I can do that.

I'm not nice to high pressure salesmen... I would have asked "Gator" if he was planning on creeping out and following us on our trips. If that didn't stop the questions, I would have pointed out that he was not giving me information I wanted and I could always switch to a different salesman until I got the information I needed... And there goes any commission he might, MIGHT, have earned. "Gator" would have given me the education without all the high pressure crap.

He works on commission so he will do everything in his power to get you to walk away with an RV right away. I bet he even gets a spot bonus if you do that.

@porwest One thing I realized is that a salesperson may overcharge you, even by a lot, but make you believe that you are getting a great deal. And you go for it...

Maybe he does. Not sure. If he does me right, he will eventually get the sale. One thing about me, because I am in sales, is that if there is a guy that does the leg work for me I want to compensate him for it. I mean, I have no obligation, of course. But it is usually how it works for me.

Have you also considered what it's like to drive a behemoth? You don't mind driving I would assume?

I have pulled long trailers before. I don't see that as being any problem at all.

I’ll be going camping as soon as this Florida heat lets up a bit. Which probably means not until November at the earliest. But I do a little bit different type of camping than you do. It wouldn’t be that easy for me to tow an RV behind me hiking on a wilderness trail! Lol

@lovebuglena Jim’s camping trips are limited to where he can haul his RV. My camping trips are limited to where my legs can carry me! Lol

I've never gone camping and never intend to. My idea of "roughing it" is spending 5-6 hours at the beach with no bathroom access and dealing with green-head flies. The people I've known who bought that style camper were ready to get rid of it within years but found it difficult to find a buyer. If I want to sit outside by a fire and grill--well that's what backyards are for.

I think what you say is true of a lot of people. But certainly not for everyone. Many people really enjoy their RVs. I enjoy nature and just sitting with a cold one relaxing, having a little open fire and BBQ, so for me this lifestyle and activity would be quite welcoming. Hell, for whatever it is worth, there are campsites for RVs along the beaches in coastal communities.

We bought an RV several years ago. We walked around the lot and found the one we wanted. It had one full bed over the drivers seat . The drivers and passenger seat could be turned for seating.there was a table with a bench on each side and a couch that could be a bed. There was a gas stove, frige and sink. Dish cabinets over-those, A wardrobe, two bunk beds and bathroom. We enjoyed it for awhile.Hope you enjoy your RV.
