We Have Walked

We have walked away from the camper. It's a bit of a disappointment. But when we were told we were looking at a 10-year loan at 17% at $800 a month for a $30k camper... There was no way were going to continue with the deal. This is the letter I wrote to Gator regarding the matter. We loved the camper and of course, as life goes, it is a bit of a disappointment the way things are going to wind up. We were fully prepared to simply pay cash to save the deal, but after talking to Denny, the finance guy, his demeanor left a really bad taste in my mouth. You were extremely helpful to us. And I fully appreciate that. I feel more badly for you than anyone, honestly. I talked to the wife and told her about my experience with Denny and said, I can try to secure financing through Ally whom we have a strong relationship with and have financed three vehicles through as well as who holds our primary savings account. She told me not to bother. She told me not to go the cash route either. What lost the sale here was really Denny for us. That pretty much ended it. It ended my effort. It ended my interest in supporting Camping World. Ultimately it ended my interest in continuing with this camper and Camping World. He was cold and not at all friendly. He provided no options and did not seem enthusiastic. He was actually a bit of a jerk if I am being completely honest. I even said we could pay cash and he basically blew me off. Probably because he gets nothing out of a cash deal, even though YOU do. We will continue to shop, but unfortunately Camping World will not be on our list. I will provide a review about my experience with you and Camping World, and will also be writing a couple of "review pieces" on the Internet in the blog circles I am part of. If you wish to read them, I will be happy to share the links. Let me know. I really wish this could have worked out differently, but it is what it is. I wanted to give you the business since you worked so hard for us. But it just did not work out, and right now walking away from the deal is the only option we are left with at this time. We will probably buy something in the spring and just pay cash.

Finance people probably care solely about making money off the customer than helping the customer get the best financing options. And then they try to sell you all this warranty crap you don't even need (at least in car sales world). Maybe it's a good thing you didn't get the camper... But kinda feel sorry for the sales guy. All that work and he doesn't get anything. Hubby's experienced that when he spent hours with a customer, even came in on his day off, and in the end they walked away, not buying a car.

@porwest From what I noticed with hubby's job, a customer can opt out of some warranty stuff they get and when that happens the money hubby earned for that gets taken away.

@porwest Shouldn't they be happy to get all that cash?

It happens. Sometimes, for whatever reason, a deal just can't be done. It is the nature of the beast. But you are right. I have always heard that a dealership makes more money on the loan commissions and warranties and other packages than they do on the car itself, and even most of the salesman's commission comes from some of that too. Everytime I offer a cash deal, I get this "oh crap" look.

@porwest I guess things can't always go our way in life. I'm sure you'll find something else that you'll like just as well and at a better price.

I couldn't believe Denny presented me that offer with a straight face. I told him with a little math, "You realize I'd be paying $96,000 for a $30,000 camper, right?" He nodded. I walked. lol

You did the right thing. There is no excuse for poor customer service, yet that seems to be the new norm these days. So what do we do about it? We hit them where it hurts…in their wallets I know you’ll find a great deal out there eventually, from a company who is enthusiastic about your business, and will provide great customer service from the beginning of the sale all the way through to the end.

@porwest That sounds about how life really is. Either that, or a good soap opera.

It is unfortunate. The cash deal is still an option, but I look at it this way. There are other campers for sale and we will ultimately find what we are looking for and get the deal we want and one that makes sense.

i am not much for camping. But my best friends rented an awesome camper this year with another couple and were over a month in Spain. It was a lot cheaper than hotels and they could go where they pleased. They could also cook there so it was still cheaper. They went to a restaurant or a bar just for fun. Maybe there´s no need to BUY a camper if you want to camp.

Ah-ha! You found the Camping World scam! And you didn’t even have to watch those videos or read those blogs. I’m glad you found out before you signed. You’re just a statistic now, another person who got screwed by Camping World. Only you found out soon enough to avoid the long-term paying mistake.

It is a bad experience that will ultimately, I believe, lead to a better experience and maybe an even better deal. I always try to see the positive side of things. At the end of the day it is what it is. I easily move on.

When you add up the total amount you will pay back, I don't think that is a good deal. Unless you've decided to live a camper lifestyle and not the occasional road trip when you need the RV, do you think it's a good investment? But if you can pay cash that would a better option.

It was a decision I made with mixed feelings a bit because I wanted the camper, I could have paid cash and still gotten it, but Denny soured the deal for me. I mean, when I mentioned cash Denny literally told me, "Do what you want," and shrugged. Denny gets no money if he doesn't sell a loan. His demeanor did not sit well with me at all. It also kind of suggested what kind of treatment I might receive once they had their money and did not need me anymore.

Sorry about the disappointment. Sounds like a smart decision. I knew you would research it and do the right thing. Maybe another time in your life you two can revisit the RV's again.
