Another serendipitous find!

I have been doing some renovation work and finally the decorating was all finished. All I needed to complete the room was some nice curtains, as the existing ones were so old that they were bleached by the sun and so perished that if you pulled them too vigorously they just separated into shreds! Curtains are shockingly expensive to buy, especially if made to measure, and difficult and time-consuming to make simply because of the volume of fabric involved – this is also why they’re expensive of course! Luckily for us we haven’t had to buy any new curtains for a long time, either we inherited curtains left by previous owners, or I managed to find just the right type second hand. This time though I needed two matching pairs for tall, narrow windows which I didn’t think would be that easy. And I wanted something that would go nicely with my pale lavender walls and green furniture. But when I took a bag of books to donate to a charity shop of course I had a quick look around in case I spotted anything I wanted, and guess what? There on the rail were two identical pairs of curtains, in perfect as-new condition, beautifully lined and with a pattern of pale purple flowers and green leaves. And they turned out to be just the right size. I love it when things work out like that! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

@Fleura I was looking for something and lo and behold I worked in a thrift shop and found it. You can find some really good things in a thrift shop. Good for you. I love thrift shops.

@Fleura They are great period. I loved working in one and on a day I was working a down coat came in and I bought it. It is a good source for many things I feel. I have gone into others since the one I worked in closed but never bought anything at others. I miss ours. I used to live by it and walk by it a lot. It became a dry cleaners after ours closed.

Serendipitous indeed!! I'm guessing you probably didn't quite believe your eyes when you first saw them.

I didn't expect they would be the right size, and I didn't have a tape measure with me as I wasn't actually looking for anything. The shop had written the measurement on the labels but funnily enough they had written them in inches and I only knew the approximate sizes in cm!

@JudyEv It's funny, 'oldies' like me are alleged to stick to feet and inches. I do use them as well, just as I use both ounces and grammes! But in this case I had a better idea of the size in cm because I had to have new windows made and they were all in metric measurements. Anyway I was dithering because although the price was a bargain for curtains, of course it wouldn't be a bargain if they didn't fit, but the lady in the shop told me I could return them and get a refund if they were not right, so I took them.

Purple.... and green.... I would never have guessed you for that color combination... (I thought cream and rose or cream and teal would have suited your personality. *shrug* Just goes to show what I know about you, huh? )

@Fleura Ohhh... I see... That's still too pinky-purple for me. Mom would have loved that, though.

A lot of my clothes come from there too. In fact the ones I'm wearing today - trousers, top and jacket - all came from charity shops at different times. They're really nice too and I often get compliments on my clothes!

Wow! They look so beautiful. Happy for you. Renovation work is at full swing in my house too. I have replaced some of the curtains in the house with blinds.. it's less expensive and easy to maintain..but then some corners can't do without curtains. I have washed these curtains last week and would put them once renovation is over and the house is cleaned. They can go good for another few years.

Thank you, I was very pleased! That sounds good, and yes blinds are useful in some places like the bathroom where you don't want curtains billowing into the water!

@Fleura We don't have curtains or blinds in our bathroom. I have replaced curtains in our office area, library, bar and one big window in the living room with blinds. Rest places still have curtains. There are less curtains now to maintain

What a lucky find. I still don't have curtains for the very reason that they are so expensive and if I want some that match the room nicely they're also very hard to find.

In general I hate shopping, especially when I have to get something specific and can't find it. But charity shops and junk shops in general are a different matter, when you wander in with no particular item in mind and you just never know what useful thing will turn up!
