Introducing Russell

Russell is a black kelpie with brown bits above his eyes and around his mouth. He is one of two dogs that we’re looking after at our current house-sit. He has his own run at some distance from the house but I can’t help but think he must be very lonely. He can’t be left loose as he takes off so he is let out for a while then locked up again. Since we’ve been here, we’ve walked him twice a day as he tends to bark quite a bit towards evening. While the noise isn’t too loud, you can hear him and it makes me feel very sorry for him. Today, we bought him tow big pork bones, which will give him something to chew even if there isn’t much meat on them. He seemed pretty pleased to get one today and we’ll give him the other in a day or two. We also had a roast leg of lamb and will give him the remains of that in a day to two. The photo is mine of Russell with Vince.

Poor Russell, I agree that he must feel very lonely. When dogs seem to bark for no reason, it is usually because they feel bored.

@JudyEv He looks friendly, similar to the dog that the neighbors who left 3 years ago had.

Hopefully he will chew on his bone even when all the meat is off it.

@LadyDuck He is friendly, just not very keen on going back in his cage.

Hmm... just a question... did the owners say it was okay to give him bones? Some pet owners don't/won't give their dogs real bones since they can splinter and damage the dog's intestines.

These are big pork bones, specifically for dogs. We wouldn't give him any small bones.

@DaddyEvil Fair enough and always a good idea. We're very careful about following instructions and at least being very careful if we do anything different.

@JudyEv I always understood that kelpies were mythical Scottish shape-shifting water horses... maybe that's why he likes to take off so he can change without you seeing.

It is typical kelpie colouring. Many are brown with creamy bits and pieces.

@BarBaraPrz We saw sculptures of the Kelpie in Scotland. They were very impressive.

Haha. We often say something similar about horses and riders as in 'that's a really cute filly. The horse is okay too.'

I am glad Russell has you and Vince looking after him. I am sorry he doesn't have any other dogs around for companionship. I am sure he will enjoy those bones.

There is a 'house-dog' but Russell's yard is quite some distance away.

I know dogs like company, but at least he gets visitors twice a day and I am sure those chewing bones are very welcome

We're not game to let him roam freely so for the moment two visits a day has to suffice.

Our neighbour has two dogs and they mourn. I just do not like that. Russel must be missing his people.

@JudyEv Dog owners have to sacrifice a lot to keep them happy. Preiti demanded a lot too - she just did not like to be left alone .

He’s a good looking dog. It always breaks my heart when I see a dog run I cannot help but to believe that the dog suffers from loneliness and isolation. He must be so thankful for you and Vince and your kind hearts.

Russell seems to be happy to see Vince in your photo and I'm sure he gets lonely at times. Lucky dog getting some big bones to enjoy. He's going to miss you both when your house sitting is over.

This breaks my heart. I can't stand to hear about dogs that are caged away from people and have limited attention. Love the photo. Now my day will be filled with thoughts of Russell. :-(

He must have a miserable life sometimes. They said we could go off overnight and the dogs would be okay but we wouldn't do that.
