Excitement From my Deck

That time of the year. I start feeding the fall and winter birds. I put out the whole unsalted peanuts on the deck. My two favorite birds are the Blue Jays and the Cardinals and the Mourning Doves. I always remember the phone calls from my Dad and the conversations about the red birds. I also enjoy seeing Woodpeckers, and many other species that show up. I managed to capture four Blue Jays for this photo. Was inside, behind the glass doors. The gorgeous red Cardinals come very early and then very late in the day. A challenge to get photos but I will eventually get more to share. Photo is mine.

@CarolDM I don’t know why we don’t have more birds. I finally took my feeder away.

@RubyHawk Some areas are like that. It could be many reasons. Maybe someone sprays in the area. Insectisides perhaps. Stray cats are predators.

@CarolDM I bet the birds are very active. I can understand why it would be hard to get photos of them. it sounds like you are very busy with them.

@CarolDM I bet you can watch them for hours. Do the cats watch them for hours too or would they rather take their naps.

I think this is a pretty nice photo! It definitely can be tricky to get good shots with as quickly as they move. I just saw a blue jay in my yard yesterday for the first time since they flew south for the winter.

Blue Jays don’t migrate here. They stay year round. I enjoy seeing them and love their blue color. Birds are a challenge to be photograph.

Awesome shot. I wish I could see them in person but they won't come to the dry southwest.

I used to live where there were a lot of Blue Jays and Cardinals. The Blue Jays at my feeder were extremely territorial. They didn't want any other birds there at all, even most of their own fellow Blue Jays. I had to shut the feeder down when they started murdering littler birds who came to eat. In the end I was just scattering some bird seed on the ground, and the fighting eased up somewhat. Glad you can enjoy the birds, I do like to watch them, too.

There are bad sides to most birds. I look forward to seeing these birds every year. I know of their aggression but so far they are happy with the peanuts. I don’t have any small birds this time of the year. This is why I feed peanuts, I don’t want to attract the sparrows that kill the bluebirds as well as the babies in the spring. I never put out seed for this very reason.

Four blue jays, you supplied the munchies, all they need now is a deck of cards for a fun Saturday night. I My favorite bird, to watch, to see in flight, and to listen to is the cardinal, in particular the male cardinal. He is so bright and pretty. I also adore swans, they are so majestic when they are on the water and float past you. My heart skips a beat when I see them.

Blue jays are obnoxious, and I believe they sometimes eat smaller birds' eggs, but I love them. They were a part of my early childhood here in California. In Chicago, I use to watch the robins, cardinals, and sparrows (and of course, squirrels) from my desk.

@CarolDM It sounds like you've really gotten to know the habits of your various feathered friends! I had forgotten that robins prefer worms to yummy seeds and nuts.

@CarolDM I sometimes put seed on my balcony raining. I miss the doves. I don't know where they have gone to.

@TheHorse I have learned about many over the years. And many new ones show up this time of the year, probably passing through. And not many will feed the birds especially in the fall and winter.
