Let's hope October improves

Yesterday was not a day I want to repeat. We are house-sitting. The evening before we’d given Russell, the kelpie dog, a big strong pork bone as a treat. When we went down in the morning, he had completely demolished half of it but then brought it up all over his bedding. Vince took him off for a walk while I cleaned up the mess. I then left for a friend’s place to teach her and another how to make mats from hay-baling twine. When I got home, Vince had taken the house-dog for a walk on a lead but, at one point, she found and grabbed some soft white feathers and devoured at least one. Then she was coughing and yelping but also shaking her head a lot. To cut a long story short, we ended up driving an hour and a half back to Perth to the only vet hospital we could find that was open. By now I’m panicking that maybe Russell had got a bone in his throat or tummy. It turned out that Lulu had three grass-seeds in her ear but the feathers were of no concern. We got home about 8.30pm. The owners never lock up but, as we were going to be a while, maybe overnight, we locked the main door. When we got home, we couldn’t open it. Luckily, we’d missed locking a side door so we were could still get in. This morning we were able to unlock the door again. I think a long nap is on the cards today. Photo is of the bones we bought Russell. I don't think we'll be giving him the other one. .

That's not a day I'd want to repeat, either. I'm glad both dogs are okay, though.

You asked me about the bones but these were such big solid ones I f felt sure they'd be okay and they were being sold for dogs. Never mind. I've learnt my lesson.

@JudyEv I know. I was really hoping everything would be okay and didn't want to push at you. "Everyone knows bones are good for dogs." But they really aren't.

@DaddyEvil It seemed okay except that perhaps he made a pig of himself then spewed it all back up. Yucky dog.

Pork bones aren't the best thing to give dogs. My vet told me to stick with beef knuckle bones if I insisted giving mine a bone, I haven't the inclination to give any bones to mine.

They were big chunky bones and sold for dogs but we won't be giving him the other one.

Oh wow, here they won't even sell beef knuckle bones for dogs ..... maybe thats because we have a lot of pet stores around.

A very tough time for you indeed! Yet you managed to take Russell to the Vet doctor well in time. This is really commendable. I hope Russell is fit and fine now.

@JudyEv Pets need very special care. That is why I and my wife are not very keen when kids ask us to start keeping pets! We ask them to grow up further and then manage pets !

It was Lulu the house-dog that got the grass-seeds in its ear, not that it matters. They are both fine now, thanks.

We rang the owner's sister who said the dog was VERY expensive and we should go to a vet. We rang a vet friend who said feather could be life-threatening. This was after we couldn't get hold of an emerency vet. It was just about 12 on a Saturday so most places had closed up. In the end, it was the grass-seeds that were worrying her.

@JudyEv Since you do not get paid and yet look forward to those activities you must be such a warm person to extend that kind of help. I am warm too in many ways but would not volunteer for taking care of houses like you do. More power to yu

@allknowing Thanks for the kind words but we haven't had to really do much at the few places we've been to. It was just bad luck that the dog got a grass-seed. We won't be taking on anything too strenuous.

We probably would but we might check a bit more carefully on how people want problems handled.

It's funny that we had issues with both dogs on the same day. Then the third thing that happened was the door refusing to open. We've fixed that now.

What a day! You had three problems so you should be fine from now on. Better not to give him another bone.

@JudyEv I remember that my niece bought those bones for her dog Winnie. Winnie chewed for several hours and never made a mess.

We thought so too. We gave the bones to our friends who regularly give their dog bones. I think Russell doesn't get much in the way of bones and was over-enthusiastic.

We never gave our dogs bones because their teeth were too strong; and we'd had problems with sharp bone fragments in the dogs' tummies. I'm glad everything worked out OK. Such a scare.

I guess we were a bit unlucky - and in a town or city maybe there wouldn't be so many grass-seeds to worry about - and no sheep to get fly-blown either.
