Were you aware. . . ?

When you are in a facility and people are passing medications to you they should. . . A. Know what meds they are giving you, B. Be able to tell you the purpose of those drugs. AND You are allowed to refuse your meds if you choose to, for any reason. I know this because first of all it happened with my first husband and secondly, both Bob and I were certified in medication administration AND I confirmed part A. with nursing staff Friday night. Bob has developed severe bloody nose problems yesterday. He wants to discontinue the baby aspirin, because VA switched him to the chewable rather than enteric, and aspirin is a blood thinner. The medication person could not tell him what he was taking, so he did not take his meds last night, as far as I know. That is not life threatening. He is not sick enough to be under care, in my opinion. Monday a doctor from our local clinic, the one who has correctly diagnosed him twice, will be in to see him. I will be there at that time. I will offer to take him home immediately. We shall see what happens. I know I am not here much, but I am stretched as far as I can go.

You are allowed to refuse. I have been in training as an ombudsman. If you have issues, please contact your local ombudsman to come talk to Bob and they can help facilitate any issues. Hope the doctor comes in to see him soon.

I am aware of the ombudsman program. I have also been a Social Services Designee in a nursing home and know his rights. He is going home today because there is nothing they can do for him that I cannot.

Understood, you've got to stay healthy for your Bob's sake. Very glad, the right doctor coming to see your husband.

Not being here much isn't life threatening, either.

Why in the world would the person giving him his meds not tell him what they were for? How absurd. I had a nurse give me the wrong meds one time. She felt terrible of course and I was okay. It was rather scary though.

Bob wanted to know which pill was the baby aspirin, as he is getting nose bleeds and wants to discontinue it. Or change back to an enteric coated one. VA switched him to chewable.

If he cant go home I would look at another place to go. They should know everything they are giving and at least be able to see why. I say be able to check as some medicines treat more than one thing.

They are lazy. Also caught one aid covering up some kind of med error. Long story. Bob will come home today.

I don't blame him for not taking any meds. He'll be much better off in your care instead of that hospital, I for one don't trust hospitals.

This is a nursing home, with "skilled care" but nothing really special, except their great physical therapy department.

It was helpful. He is not fully convinced Bob should be home alone for part of the day, but it is going to be okay.

I think that you both know how to best handle Bob's medical issues, they seem to fail at the hospital level.

Yup. Years ago I helped my Dad. He was in Hospice at the time. I worked part time and hubby helped Dad best he could. I came home one afternoon to find that a know it all friend had convinced Dad's doc to prescribe pills for Dad- Dad had said that his legs were bothering him; nerves. The dumb bunnies prescribed sedatives like you would an emotionally off person. I got home to Dad almost falling cause of the sedative that he had taken. I called and gave everybody heck. Big time. And insisted that Dad not take that med- he already had issues breathing. Did not need to be so dopey he couldn't breathe at all. Got to watch those medical providers like a hawk.

Don't worry about us. Just look after Bob and yourself - not to mention your sister. No wonder you feel stretched.

The medication person should know what she/he is giving out. I hope you take Bob home if you feel it's necessary. Don't worry about not being here; and don't forget to take care of yourself.

It's a must for the person to know the reason of taking the meds.
