Fast food now and then. Learning to cook

The first time I ate fast food I was very young and I was in the US with my parents. We went to New York and I was amazed when my father took us to a place that had lots of different dishes. We took what we wanted out of the place where the dishes were kept and we paid when we got out. I suppose that some people replaced the parts that were left empty. It was awesome. Later on always at the US I first tried pizzas and wonderful pancakes with many syrups, butter and cream. I still try to go to one of those pancake houses when I visit the US in spite of the horrible coffee they serve there. I have noticed that fast food is getting worse as time goes by. Even pizzas are not what they were and the only good hamburger one can see is the painted hamburger you see to invite you. All these places (I would not call them restaurants) are helping our population get at the same time fat and undernourished. Many times, when I speak of a dish or an ingredient, people only remember that their grandmas used to cook this or that. I woner if we should live with less material things and eat better. This post was written after watching an episode of "My 600-Lb life. They are young obese people and I wonder where do they get the money to eat so much. This episode ended with the death of a very young person Why don´t we spend a small part of our day cooking real food? It is not difficult or expensive. I read every day @TheSojourner (Coral) posts abour frugal cooking and they are delicious.

It does not take much to cook a good healthy meal. And it is a lot better for you.

I usually cook my dinner. But I sometimes eat fast food though or at least eat out in a restaurant.

I love real restaurants. And as I can´t pay the restaurants I love, I invite friends to my house and I cook delicious food for them and later they invite me to wonderful restaurants.

I usually do cook at home but that doesn't mean what I cook is "healthy" for us to eat.

Anything made at home has to be more heathly than fast food. I have seen fast food French fries compared to real ones after a couple of days and it is not the same end product.

@marguicha Yes, I agree... The fast food places have more chemicals in their fries than potatoes.

And cooking at home can be 100 times more healthy! My first fast food was in 1969 and I loved it. Now, I cringe even thinking about the sugar, grease, sodium, fats and lack of nutrients in ALL fast foods! Even their salads aren't healthy:(

I watch that program sometimes and it’s amazing how anyone lets themself get so fat .I don’t see how they afford to feed themselves. I’ve always cooked real food.

@RubyHawk And it is not so difficult to make either. I normally spend less than half an hour cooking a full meal. I spend more time only when I have guests and I also make hummus or other apperitives.

I wonder even where they get the money to do it. Cooking from scratch is so much cheaper.

@marguicha Yes, cooking is cheaper and healthier. I don’t understand people that go out and eat junk food.

I don't even think fast food tastes good. So much of it is poorly prepared, not nutritious at all, and just plain greasy. I can cook, and it tastes good. It's better, and it's cheaper. And I can guarantee you if you ever went into some of those fast-food kitchens, you would never, ever eat there.

I can´t even walk by some of those places because I can´t stand the smell of the hot grease.

@MarieCoyle I remember once, a couple of decades ago, that we went to the beach with my husband. We had to move as the small main street was full of disgusting eating joints and the smell of grease did not let the delicious aroma of the sea come.

Nothing is like it used to be. Cutting costs and using cheaper ingredients has really put the cabosh on what used to be some yummy food. Kit Kats come to mind. I remember years ago when my mom brought some home. They were made in England then. So divine a flavor. Now they are bland and not anywhere like they used to be. When I first left home and started out on my own everything I cooked was from scratch. I even made my own noodles. Not so anymore.

@marguicha ........I like egg noodles. Sauce is always better from scratch. I can't handle the canned or bottled types.

I have watched that show ans it scares me. And I agree with you the fast food we get now is pathetic in taste and surprisingly their shelf life even if kept outside of refrigerator lasts more than week. Try keeping a mc Donald’s burger on table.

I would not spend my money in one of those burgers If I spend that same amount in ground veal, add some diced fried onion with a bit of crushed garlic, an egg and bread crumbs I can make the best hamburgers at home and all that would serve at lleast 3 people with that money.

We very rarely eat out. Not even fast food. It just costs too much for a decent meal. Fortunately, my wife and daughter prepare most of our meals every day. I can cook but I'm usually at work and when I get home I'm pretty tired.

Once in a while, just to know, I check the cost of a combo at a fast food joint. I can make delicious food for several people with that money. And at a fast food restaurant I could never eat what I call a "decent" meal.

We usually cook. Our local pizza place is still very good. But the fast food places are about worthless for getting any thing that has taste anymore.

Was the restaurant where you ate in New York a buffet style one? Those used to be the best places to take the kids when we ate out. There aren't many around here anymore, they seemed to all disappear after COVID hit. I agree that fast food quality has gotten worse over the years. Many of the places don't even sell salads anymore and it's hard to get anything semi-nutritious.

Hubs can only cook occasionally now; and I can't cook at all anymore. We get one good meal Monday through Friday from Meals on Wheels. Americans don't eat well...there's no denying that. I wish we could win the lottery and hire a chef!

Dear Linda. There is a moment in our lives when we cannot do what we once did. I loved to garden and I can´t anymore. I can´t bend since I had the limphoma. I cannot have my house as clean as I used to either and all of this has to do with age and different ailments. What I meant in this post goes to those people who are able to cook but won´t do it.

Yes this culture of eating fast food and outside much is very much in USA and other countries. This culture has come in India too where a lot of people are indulging in outside food especially fast food and eating less home food. It's sad. People are inviting unwanted diseases and fueling food industry with lot of money . I have started eating home cooked meals more and eating outside food occassionally and it has shown good results in my health along with some walk and exercise. It's not bad to indulge in Favourite foods occassionally but portion control need to be practiced

@marguicha HK's housing price is skyrocketing high. My friends and I live in small apartment. The kitchen is very small. So we prefer to eat out when we have gatherings.

Fast food pizza taste horrible, covered with too much cheap cheese, a bad crust that is hard like rock, cheap tomato paste instead of a good sauce. It does not take a lot to cook and we can have a lot better food and healthier. We must thank fast food for the increased obesity in our country. FAT kids did not exist when I was a young girl.

Its a lot healthier to cook your own food. You know what goes into it. Fast foods are good once in a while for a change of taste.
