Shoe polish and felt pens - what do they have in common

The Horse (@TheHorse) has done a great job of restoring a JBL speaker and has revealed he used shoe polish to help get the colour he wanted. This reminded me that when we wanted to sell a house we were in, the blue carpet in the bedroom had a couple of pale spots where some bleach had dripped. I was able to touch up the spots with a blue felt pen. When I had finished, you couldn’t tell that the carpet was anything but perfect. The photo shows part of the lounge area of that house. We don’t have quite as much room now. The bookcases either side of the mirror are still with us. Vince made them for me in the first years of our marriage.

Add crayons to the list -- I've used brown crayon to hide scratches in dark wood!

That's a good idea too.

Those bookshelves are treasures, you will always keep them! I have used permanent marker pens to color in things and yes, this works good! I've never thought about shoe polish, which is basically a form of dye. It would do an excellent job:)

I will always find room for the bookcases. I used to use shoe polish on my pony's hooves if we were competing but they have better products now.

@JudyEv I used mascara to cover white hair, when I tied it back in a braid! Now, it doesn't bother me at all:(

@kobesbuddy During the war years, women used to paint a line up the back of their legs so it looked like the seam of a stocking.

Touching up is good, and so much cheaper than anything else.

I was a bit surprised that my idea worked but it worked really well.

Reading your question I was thinking "they both stain your fingers, no matter how much attention you pay". I also used the markers to retouch a spot on the carpet. Those bookcases look really good.

@LadyDuck This was the start of learning more about working with wood. I think the next biggish thing was a futon bed for our son. It had a slatted base.

The bookcases are still in use. They were one of the first things that Vince made.

I still have those bookcases. They're pretty old now - probably 50 years. But there is no reason why they should deteriorate. They just have to sit there.

I got a drop of bleach on a blue shirt, and covered it up with a blue pen. I still wear that shirt occasionally.

I sold the wheel in the finish. It used to make my shoulders ache badly and it took forever even to spin a small amount. The good bit came next when you plied two strands together but that part went very quickly.

I used a black felt tip pen to cover a scratch on my black high heels that I use to wear before they got too ragged.

I was going to say both will stain clothing if you aren't careful with them... Was that your favorite travel mirror? Where could you go if you stepped through it?

@JudyEv Oh, WOW! That would be so much fun! I've never seen a mirror that big before. I've seen a wall made up of little tiny mirrors but it wasn't as pretty as the one in your photo.

We loved that mirror. It had a gold tint to it. I'm sure if I stepped through it I would be transported straight to France.

We lived in that house in the 1980s. Unfortunately, we weren't able to move the mirror. It had a sort of gold backing and was very lovely.

I have used permanent felt markers to cover up bleach stains. Once I added some fabric as a skirt to a plain white T shirt. I then painted on the shirt with the same color blue that was in the fabric. It was a cute summer dress.
