A cool photo from my hike the other day.

Rob and I hiked in what was a volcano only a few million years ago. In more recent times, it had been mined for...I forget exactly what. I posted a photo of the pine and eucalyptus trees we hiked through to get to the volcano a couple of discussions ago. Rob took a cool photo of what may have been a main crater in the volcano and sent it to me yesterday. Some of the rocks, due to later geological thrusts, are at 90 degrees from the original positions. It's kind of "moonscapish" now, with occasional pine trees (and even small groves) poking their way through the rock. Rob enhanced the attached photo by "developing" it in black and white. I hope you find it creepy-cool, like I do. Photo is by Rob Riutta.

Cool photo. Does the volcano have a name?

I think it did. But right now all I can find is Sibley Regional Volcanic Preserve.

"Round Top is a remnant of a 10 million year old volcano, tipped over by tectonic activity. It's pretty high at 1,763 feet. Unfortunately the peak is privately owned so you can't go right to the top but there is a 2.5 mile loop around the peak."

@TheHorse That's very cool. We've been to Mt. St. Helens, Lassen and have seen the volcanic fields, etc.

This is a great photo showing the shape of what used to be a volcano.

@celticeagle I enjoy driving through Idaho. Of course it's a neighbor to my mom's native Montana.

That’s cool! Nice to find abandoned/extinct volcano remnants like that. (Although, years after I’d hiked Diamond Head, “they” said that volcanoes are never “extinct.” )

@TheHorse — “they” say Diamond Head is only half a million years old, so that’s hardly time to become extinct in volcanic talk. Speaking of extinct and earthquakes, the cooling towers at TVA Paradise KY were imploded last weekend. You can see my discussion about it, and sing along with Prine yet again.

Well, this one was last active 10,000,000 years ago. I figgered our odds were good. I wonder how we would have reacted had a major 'quake hit while we were in the crater, though.

I didn't think that photo looked like something you'd take... Nice to know I was right. It is a good photo, though. I wouldn't say it was creepy, exactly, as much as I'd call it cold. (I'm really not a fan of black and white photos. *shrug*)

@TheHorse I've had a few people try to tell me that some of my photos would look good in black and white... I always say, you can change your photos the way you like. I will change mine the way I like.

@DaddyEvil You could send them your photos, have them tweak them, and be "co-authors," I suppose. I've co-written some songs out here. No biggie. I don't think any will make me (or my co-authors) famous.

Great photo. Not sure how it looks in color but b&w makes it look almost timeless. And makes me think of the past. I love it! This would look great hanging on the wall.

@kobesbuddy Exactly. And it's not like videos and TV shows. A lot of it is plants and animals quietly doing what they do. (Just like humans, actually.) We did see a red tailed hawk dive for prey the other day. But we couldn't see if he made a capture. Usually we just see vultures and hawks soaring...searching...

@kobesbuddy Exactly. As a bed-wetting (formerly) Liberal nature lover, I always for to for the bunnies and squirrels. But I accept that we all gotta do what we all gotta do.

"Sibley was also home to the now-extinct Sibley Volcanic Mine which mined rhyolite for construction materials from 1873-1909." Sigh. Now I have to look up "rhyolite."

At times such Retro look pictures can be really enticing! Such Geographical formations can be something of keen interest and you managed to hike to a really offbeat place. The picture is a big bonus !
