The dog with the cabriole legs

I’ve introduced Chopper, the blue heeler at our house-sit, and I can’t help thinking his forelegs are like cabriole legs. In furniture-making, cabriole legs are those shaped in two curves. The upper curve is convex or bows out while the lower one is concave and bows inwards. Research tells me the design was used by the ancient Chinese and Greeks and was then taken up in Europe in the very early 18th century. I guess it’s the bit just above his feet that looks most like the legs on some antique furniture. Or do you think my imagination is working overtime?

Hope it's natural for Chopper to have those cabriole legs.

I think it is natural. They look okay to me as if that's how they're supposed to be.

No, it appears he indeed has one. That's a new term for me. That's one advantage of being on MyLot. I learn new terms and new ideas from users all over the world. May I know if you can fold a piece of furniture with cabriole legs? Just wondering. Thank you.

The leg would normally be in one piece. I don't think you could fold it.

He reminds me so much of Sally in her last years. Those doggie legs have to withstand a ton of impact from hard play. That's why Sally had horrible arthritis- even in her elbows. Yes, dogs have elbows.

@JudyEv The arthritis came from Sally's insistence at playing wild and crazy ball. Such a joy to watch her speed away and zip back.

@sallypup Chopper played with a ball for us too but Gracie wouldn't give hers back and was chewing pieces of it so we haven't played with it since.

Poor Sally. Such a shame she suffered so much from arthritis.

I had a pit-bull years back and his legs were shaped exactly like this dog's. You aren't imagining a thing, their legs resemble the leg of cabriole furniture. That's probably where they got this idea from!

The photo doesn't seem to show it so well so I thought perhaps I was imagining it but others have agreed so it's all good.

@kobesbuddy So the shape of the legs wasn't a handicap.

Are such kind of legs typical of the blue heeler?

Yes, bulldogs and a few other breeds have legs like this too.

Visiting Herculaneum in Italy I have seen a mosaic where there was a table with cabriole legs, so in Italy those existed in the fist century for sure. I agree about the legs of this dog.

At times, they look even more curved. But this was the best photo I could get to show it.

It looks even more so if I could get the angle just right. I'm not sure he likes having his photo taken.

Oh wow, I know what you mean, I just didn't know the word for it. I see it a bit in Chopper's legs, but was mostly noticing his sporty looking coat

It looks a bit like a tweed or maybe a 'houndstooth' would be nearer the mark! lol

Hope that dog is not sensitive to being called cabriole legs They are curvy Wonder if it is indicative of the breed?

I didn't say 'cabriole' aloud in his presence! And I think it is indicative of the breed and of some other breeds. Pugs and bulldogs are similar I think.

Now that you mentioned it, I looked closely and it does look like some antique furniture.. Cabriole legs... that's a new term I learnt today on Mylot. And Chopper has posed beautifully for his cabriole legs

I was beginning to think he didn't like having his photo taken but then I got some better ones. You really need to get down to his level or they look a bit strange.
