Mauna Loa erupting now

Just now, early 4pm news, Mauna Loa erupting. Shelters open by Red Cross. Mayor Roth, hasn't issued official evacuation, yet. News reporting, many evacuated from last night. Mauna Loa started erupting at around midnight this morning. Mauna Loa hasn't erupted in 38 years. (Made corrections - originally had 49 years. Sorry.) Ash warning stopped early today. Officials say wear face masks, and keep indoors. Have meds on you. Forecast for length by scientist, not long eruption. 1984 was Moans Loa's last eruption. It lasted 3 weeks. March 24, 1984 then Mayor Kim got a call from their police department about the eruption. April 15, eruption ended. One thing they learned, was to keep in close touch with scientist about eruption. Professor Scott Rowland University of Hawaii, faculty member of Earth Science, says today's eruption is following it's usual course as it did before. Let's hope it's a very short one that doesn't endanger anyone or any structures or wildlife.

Forgive my ignorance but is this a long way from you? I'm guessing your area could be affected by the ash and smoke. Is that correct?

@oahuwriter Can you see hear or feel anything from where you live? Have there been earthquakes near the volcano? I'm trying to draw a picture in my mind.

I live on a different island, Oahu. Eruption is at Big Island, the southern most island of Hawaiian Island chain of island. The ash can be deadly, so doctors advisory for people with pulmonary problems. I'm in no danger at all.

I hope that professor Scott Rowland is right. I would not feel safe living close to the volcano.

@oahuwriter People are evacuating, this means it's not safe to stay near the volcano.

@LadyDuck Some did, but Mayor did not make evacuation official, but shelters were open for those who wanted them. Yesterday, everyone went home, so shelters closed and on stand by only be now.

Sounds exciting. What does an "eruption" actually mean?

I hope there aren't anymore eruptions going on in Hawaii, I read there were 2 that exploded but I'm not sure if both are in Hawaii.

Hope that erupting volcano doesn't cause any damage or evacuation. I find it interesting seeing it on the news but wouldn't want to be in the path of all the flowing lava.

Yes, very harrowing living with volcanoes, though everywhere's landmass made from volcanoes. Big Island, is beautiful and has wood rose. I saw my first pair of saffron finch there, while visiting one summer, years ago.

Read about this volcano in our geography lessons at school. It might be a spectacle to look at from afar but terrible to be nearby.
