Late Gifts And Breakfasts

Have you ever been really late with Christmas shopping and -gift buying in particular?. Over the years l can recall a number of times when l have hurried out on Christmas morning to grab last minute gifts. I'll try my best not to let it happen this year. I want to be home Christmas morning enjoying a traditional breakfast of pepperpot, homemade bread and hot chocolate. Do you have a traditional breakfast for Christmas morning? I'm doing really well this year. I have almost started shopping. In past years, I was always done with shopping by now but the past few years have been different. Once the kids moved out, it just hasn't been the same. Then Covid robbed away two years. I will be a late shopper again this year :( The only thing that's the same is the food. Your pepperpot and bread has made me hungry :) We don't really have a traditional breakfast but the afternoon dinner has all the trimmings.

@Kandae11 I'm up by 5am Christmas Day to start preparing. Honest? I usually have toast, coffee and a couple of the hard boiled eggs that I make for deviled eggs. Sometimes gifts aren't opened until after noon. It depends on when my wife gets rolling :)

Wow! Good to see you. A lot of emphasis is placed on Christmas dinner too. However breakfast is important too - after opening the gifts, time to relax and eat.

@Kandae11 Panettone is a sweet bread that is sold during the Christmas time.

I celebrate Christmas on the eve of the 24th and I do not have a traditional breakfast or dinner for that matter. I have not heard of pepperpot before, it sounds interesting

Oh wow, that must really be nice but I wonder if that would also work in hot climates.

It is made from choice pieces of meat with a lot of spices added. It gets the dark color from a product of cassava called casareep. The casareep is also a preservative and a pot of pepperpot could last for weeks without needing refrigeration.

@Kandae11 update: tap on my back. I was able to buy gifts for my 2 godchildren. The nephews and niece will be tomorrow. But I am thinking if I am going to give them money so they can buy what they want..

No, I don’t. We have traditional Christmas dinners. Turkey, cornbread dressing, potato salad, green bean casserole, pecan pie, cocoanut cake, caramel sweet potatoes. Cranberry Sauce and more. We used to have dinners at my house but my daughter in law does the dinners at their house now. My other daughter in law helps with the food. They won’t let me do anything.

@Kandae11 Not at all. I’m appreciative that they have taken over. I live in a small apartment now and my son has a large house. My apartment is hardly large enough for everyone to squeeze in and they have plenty of room. It works perfectly.

usually we must attend the big family gathering when about 50 or so of family members there - but Xmas b'fast? nah, just run most of the time to chase after the train/bus, to get to the gathering in time. (What a life, right?)

Wow! That is a large gathering. Usually family members at our breakfasts are usually family who live there. If anyone wants to drop in - fine, but it is usually just close family.

@Kandae11 My mother is getting older, so all the siblings and children's of the siblings and whoever else, turn up at those family gatherings. Some years, my mother's younger siblings also come with their children and their children... (I often avoid those gatherings, I can't breath with too many tall people around .)

That pepperpot looks good. No traditional breakfast. I might make some kind of breakfast casserole for Christmas morning.

I can remember going out on the 24th in years gone by to pick up stocking stuffers, mittens for our son and things like that. But this year I should be all set. Christmas morning we will have our son and his family in here. We will enjoy a nice big brunch together and exchange gifts, it will be alot of fun watching the babies open their gifts.

I don't have a traditional Christmas breakfast mostly because the whole family gathers at my house by noon. Usually the morning flies by with preparations but I always look forward to having the whole family together. I'm glad you have a breakfast you look forward to on Christmas morning

@Kandae11 we do a small Christmas Eve but a big day on Christmas filled with all sorts of food and desserts we don't have at other times during the year

Christmas dinner is also a big thing. Preparations begin from the night before and continue after breakfast.

Only Walgreens is open on Christmas. I've always managed to have my shopping done before Christmas. As of yesterday, all my shopping is done and all but one package is wrapped.

I wish l were in that position. Usually pharmacys are open - those have very nice gift sections. Then every main town has what is called GrandMarket. It starts Christmas eve night and goes until mid morning Christmas Day. Certain streets are blocked off and vendors are out selling all kinds of stuff including cooked food, fruits and vegetables.

@Kandae11 Basically, soy sauce soup with rice cakes and people add their favorite fixings into soup. I like to add shiitake mushrooms, seaweed, mizuna if I can find a small bunch.

Better to get all things done in time, so that you don't have last minute rush on the festival day. Your Christmas breakfast sounds delicious and you need to relish it with a peaceful mind.

Christmas is not a very main festival here. However due to our strong and unique cultural ethos and effects of globalisation, Christmas is a major shopping and glitz festival. A lot of events take place in schools and in Residential societies. Retailers offer huge discounts sometimes, although the genuineness is debatable. So no traditional breakfast as such. Yet, we do bring some Plum cakes or Pastries and Sandwiches/Chips and have them with Tea or as a Dinner. I hope that you have an enjoyable and relaxed Christmas this time and not in a hurry.

No. Our traditional meal is supposed to be lunch or supper. Since it is just Pretty and I again this year, I'll cook the turkey and veggies early in the morning and we'll snack on them, take a nap, snack again, take a nap... etc.
