Some people will try anything

I recall in my younger years, boys daring each other to lick a metal pole or metal fence during the winter, not telling the ones who didn't know what the results of this action would be. Of course, tongue sticking to the pole or fence. I mean, stuck there. When I was in grade school this was something the bigger boys dared the littler boys to do. They didn't find anyone to take them up on their offer very often. I had forgotten all about this, truthfully. I have read 3 posts on facebook about kids trying this today. But if people tell their kids NOT to do it, you know they will. That's how that works. So, paramedics had to be called for this one. ''''Meteorologist Jacob Dickey 2 h · Don't lick the poles, folks! Southern Illinois Fire Incidents 5 h · Delayed 1200 hrs Cairo Fire Alexander County Ambulance Medical-Child got their tongue stuck to a pole outside.'''' On the outside chance someone you know sticks his or her tongue to freeze on a metal object outside, remember a glass of very warm water will loosen the tongue. That is, if you can get the water to not freeze solid while getting it from the sink to the stuck person!

You need to go there with the water in a thermos, it will keep warm enough to loosen the tongue. I never did this, I would have been to disgusted at the idea to lick a metal pole.

@MarieCoyle As we lived in the center of a city, I cannot remember that kids did this.

I was never tempted to try it. I did hear about one kid being stuck on a metal pole for a long while until someone helped him. Another kid licked the metal pump handle on an old fashioned well pump and his tongue froze to it. I don't remember anyone ever daring me to do that or anything like that.

@LadyDuck Oh, I remember it happening in Chicago at school. One kid licked the metal flagpole and left part of his tongue hanging there.

I remember doing that when I was pretty little... Strangely enough, it was the brother that told me mom made rice by cooking maggots that got me to stick my tongue on a metal pole. At least he was nice enough to make sure I barely touched my tongue to the pole. But my tongue was still sore for several days afterward. And no, he didn't have a glass of warm water handy. I just yanked my head back and left a bit of tongue skin behind on the pole.

I never fell for that trick, but I knew a lot of kids that did. Gee, that brother sounds like he loved to torment you, DE.

@MarieCoyle That's the brother that we depend on if we need help with anything. He's allowed to torment me a little bit.

@DaddyEvil I think I would still be tempted to fix him a bowl (fake of course) of maggots....be good for a laugh, anyway!!

I am not sure that kids here (who are growing up in Southern CA) would know about this (unless they've actually sat through A Christmas Story). If given the opportunity, they just might try it out of disbelief . Oh yah, it happens . Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas!

Unfortunately, I did it when I was about 5 years old. I still remember how painful it was, that was such a stupid thing to do.

And tongues are so sensitive. I've burned my tongue on hot cocoa and not been a happy camper for some time.

It's so easy to be burned by really hot foods and drinks. And it hurts for a long time, too.

This will never happen in my country because we get the sun all year round. No snow. No below 0 degree temperature. It's really interesting to read about this kind of things because I only see this in movies and thought that it doesn't really happen in real life. So it does.

I like snow. I hate it when we get ice storms. I've lived in a lot of places, most of them had snow at least sometimes. Yes, people do strange things in real life!

You'd need a thermos to do that one for sure.

Boys will be boys. It's funny. You don't hear about girls doing these things!

That's very true. But boys do have a tendency to dare each other to do things they shouldn't do!
