2c for a chilli

Tomorrow, we go to a friend’s house with five others for a four-night stay to bring in the New Year. We are taking a prawn salad to share on Friday night and we went shopping this morning to buy what we needed. One thing we needed was a red chilli and apparently the one we picked was the hottest they have. We only needed one and they were available loose so we popped one in a bag and off we went to the check-out. It cost us 2c! I guess it’s just lucky we bought a few other things as well.

@JudyEv That is a good deal. No wonder you bought some other things. Do the people like spicy food is why you bought it?

Vince is making a salad and one of the ingredients was chilli although we don't normally eat it.

@Hannihar I guess we will have a very small serve first. If it's too spicy we might be able to leave the chilli behind.

Imagine if it was all we wanted and we handed over 20c or whatever. They wouldn't have been able to give us our change.

@JudyEv With hot peppers you never know how hot it is until you cut it and taste. On the same plant I had some mild and some so hot that made me cry while I was removing the seeds.

@LadyDuck I didn't know there would be so much difference with pods from the same bush.

We should probably have taken it back and got a milder one.

It’s a nice looking pepper. I’m sure it will add good flavor.

I think it will be too hot for me. I probably try to dodge any red bits in the salad.

@JudyEv Make sure to get all of the seeds washed out. Seeds hold most of the heat.

A small amount will go on the top of the salad. And I'll be picking mine off!! What a waste of 2c.

That would be funny and awkward if it was your only purchase, but if you need it, you need it.

I would have just left the chilli out, especially as I don't like it.

Chilli can be easy to plant. Perhaps you can plant your own chilli and you can have it any time you like. I remember I bought chilli magnet on the freezer when I travelled to Thailand. That's amazing I could get seeds from it and then it can even grow up

We never use them so it would be a bit of a waste to plant them.

That chili surely felt honoured that it was picked - one among so many. We do not use red chilies in salads.

In the end, we didn't add it to the salad. We didn't think anyone would like it much.

We call them siling labuyo. They're small but very hot. It's ironic that they can get pretty expensive here, and yet, they're easy to grow and already ready to pick.

2c only for a red chilli? That's a good deal. And they allow you to buy just one. Normally, you need to buy more if the items are on sale.
