As Predicted, Should be Settled by February!

Our Christmas Tree 2022
United States
January 15, 2023 7:12pm CST
Shortly after we moved into our home my husband asked when I would have everything settled and put away. I looked around at the multitude of boxes and rolled my eyes. I guess he thought it would take a couple of weeks. So not to become overwhelmed and tire myself out, I had been doing 4 boxes a day. It was slow coming together. He was not happy with my progress. I finally told him that I believed I'd have it done by February. Flu ran through the household at the beginning of December and I was at a standstill for almost 3 weeks. I was able to pull off Christmas. Was delighted to be able to display my decorations that had not been put out for many years. Little Miss and I decorated our tree and it was lovely. I didn't want to take it down. There are a few more boxes to go through and bring up stairs. I will be so happy to have it all done so I can focus on other things. I want to relax and enjoy our new home.

Your tree is lovely! I'm sorry you and your family got sick. That's definitely not helpful when you're trying to get a new house put together... Uhm... did you suggest your hubby could be helping put everything away? If I forgot to tell you before, congrats on the new house!

Hubby was working his tail off right up until the week of Thanksgiving. Left home early and got home late. My son did come over to help me out. We managed to get quite a bit moved upstairs. Once warm weather arrives I can go upstairs and sort through what is left. I am sure that much of it will be donated.

@DaddyEvil it is a work in progress. I know I'll have more things to donate once I go through what is upstairs.

@ElusiveButterfly Oh, I see... I guess I could find it in my heart to excuse him, too , then. As long as none of the boxes have anything that's needed before you get to them, that's okay. When my daughter and I were packing to move into this house five years ago, I was working long hours so she took it on herself to sort everything we owned into three piles. One pile was packed to bring with us. One pile was sorted into trash bags to throw away and one pile was packed to go to a local thrift store for donation. I tend to hoard things but not badly enough that it causes problems. She isn't sentimental at all and was ruthless with the things we'd accumulated over our lives. I took three truck loads of stuff to be donated. We threw away or gave away much more than that and ended up still having too much stuff for this house. (We moved from a 1,400 sq ft house with garage into a 750 sq ft house with a tiny storage room the landlord calls a garage...) So we gave away more stuff and then started packing things we wanted to keep into plastic storage totes and putting them into the "garage" here. We're still crowded into this house but it's livable. I'm sure you'll eventually get everything sorted and the house will be beautiful when you get done.

Your tree is so pretty! I’m so sorry you all had the flu and hope you regain your strength. It takes lots of time to unpack and put things away in their proper place. It will get done and you will enjoy having a neat and organized home. So will your husband. Congratulations again! Can’t wait to see more of your house.

It's a neat old house. We need to replace the windows, put on new siding, replace the roof, and a few other things. One step at a time. We did not have a sofa when we moved here. Our old place was too small to have one. So we need to buy a sofa, a new stove, and insulated drapes. We replaced the refrigerator because the fridge they left was leaking. Oh the joys of home ownership.

@ElusiveButterfly Everything in its time. Just do what you can and what is necessary right off the bat. Home ownership can be a joy and a money pit, but what the heck! You finally have a beautiful house!!!!!!!!!

Ellie was really good around the tree. I worried when she ran behind the tree chasing the cat!

I wish I could have a tree but either Tuffy or Roscoe or both would ruin it darn it.

The two of you did a wonderful job decorating the tree, and the dog loves it too. I never ever gave myself a timetable when it came to unpacking after a move, we are under a tight timeline packing to move, that it was enough. With the flu and the holidays, you are doing well to be unpacked and settled in come next month.

I wasn't in a rush to get it all unpacked. It will be there when we are ready to sort through it. My neighbor said she moved into her home 3+ years ago and she still has things to sort.

@Juliaacv I am trying to think the same way. I donated so much and tossed out a lot.

@ElusiveButterfly If she hasn't unpacked boxes from that many years ago, I would venture to say that she does not need the contents of those boxes. I have a rule, if it is not used or worn in 12 months, then it is either thrown away or donated.

Moving is stressful and time consuming, it takes time to have everything stored in the right place.

@ElusiveButterfly I just noticed your dog in the photo. He thinks you put that there just for him. How funny. Even with the flu shot we still get the flu unfortunately. Take care.

My husband wants to build a 3 bedroom, one story house on the land. We would sell this house and pay down the mortgage.

You should take your time, enjoy the process. My husband would joke it took him six months to settle and unpack. But he was working full-time then, and we have no reason to move again. So here we are.

I would prefer not to move again. Told my husband he would need to hire someone to do it because I'm done with it.

You are like my aunt. They still have their Christmas trees and decors in their house. I am sure it would take until February to keep them all.

Our tree and decorations actually were taken down on New Years Eve. My son helped me. Only took about a half hour to complete the entire task.

My son has been helping out. He doesn't live in the area but comes to visit and to help me out. The tree was 4 feet taller. My husband had to cut off the bottom to fit it in the house.

If it takes a while to unpack, surely it doesn't really matter. It must be lovely have a bit more room and being able to get out all your decorations.
