Fathers and daughters

I’ve just been reading about @marguicha’s special friendship with a younger woman which started when they went on holiday together. The young friend borrowed money from her father for the fare and Marguicha is not sure if the loan ever got repaid. It reminded me that, before I was married, I was doing a lot of crochet. If I bought ‘pure new wool’, I’d hit my father for a subsidy as he was a sheep-farmer. My argument was that, by buying pure wool, I was supporting his industry. Being the kind, generous man he was, he’d always hand over a few dollars (pounds in those days). The photo is of one of my father's prize-winning Merino rams. The look of the breed has changed a lot since those days.

In other words, your dad was a typical man confronted with a typical daughter.

Yes, I guess so. Dads can be pretty soft sometimes as I'm sure you are.

He seems to be a very generous person. Do you still crochet? Fathers are always kind and generous to their daughters.

Many have very strong relationships with their fathers. So do mothers and sons of course.

@JudyEv Indeed Mother loved her sons more than her daughters but it is the daughters that pampered her (lol)

Never knew that sheep could carry so much wool. I guess the modern breed isn't so woolly.

They don't like so much wool round the neck and down the legs now.

@Ronrybs No although it has all changed since those days. I don't really know what they look for nowadays in a good fleece. Length of staple was important and the 'crimp' of the fleece affected its value too. The crimp is the natural 'wave' formation of the staple. If the waves are very close together then it's 'fine wool' and more valuable.

@JudyEv I take it that the quality isn't affected by how long the wool is?

Oh wow that sheep looks so odd. Is it just huge amounts of fur or is that big lumps of fat?

It's wool, The staple (length) might be 5 or 6 inches so once the wool is taken off, the sheep would only be half the size.

Wow, it looks like that ram is ready for arctic weather. Did it get really cold where you grew up?

Not really. We never got snow. The sheep are grown to produce wool. The fleeces are sold and the wool made into yarn or fabric.
