Enjoying their new car

The photo shows my great grandfather and his wife in their Model T Ford. Don’t they just look proud? The top half of the windscreen is propped open and his knee is propped nonchalantly against the dashboard. My great grandfather died in 1937 at the age of 78 and his wife died a few years later. Going by this photo, he may not have enjoyed his new possession for too many years. But it’s hard to tell his age here really. The number plate NGN stands for Narrogin, the town where they lived.

Your great grandmother shows her age more in the photo than he does. What a lovely photo!

The back looks like a postcard so I don't know who would have taken the photo or why the back of it looks like a postcard.

I wonder how much he paid for it and if he knew how to drive it. The article I just read was interesting and made me wonder how people learned to drive back in those days.

Oh, I'll bet he had no problem driving once he got the hang of it. My dad learned to drive a tractor before he could drive a car. Granddad was a share cropper.

@rebelann It was interesting that the article said farmers were the hardest to teach to drive.

What an interesting article. Thanks for the link. I don't know what he would have paid for it but he would have learnt how to drive it.

Is that a model T, the first car that was made?

Not really the first one but Henry Ford made these to be available to 'ordinary' people. They were much more affordable than anything else that was available.

Yes, they look cool! It's nice that you still have these old photos. I wonder if they needed to sit for driving test in those old days....

Probably at this time they didn't need licences but the car must have been licensed.

Awesome picture! We do have some such pictures with this or similar cars of those times as Postcard pictures! They would have been a status symbol in those times! The Dressing looks like that of the British colonial times' high status one. So was that dressing common in Australia too at that time?

I suppoose they were but I don't know of it. I know Dad put tow-bars on old horse-drawn machinery to convert it to tractor-driven.

They do look like having arrived as cars were a rarity to start with. My grandfather purchased a car in 1936 and there was just a handful of them where he lived. It was a Morris car.

Cars were certainly a status symbol in those days. I remember the Morris cars and my grandfather later had an Austin. This is my Dad's Oldsmobile. That's me in the middle.
