Blow up your TV, as John Prine once sang. Well, in this case, we’re blowing up this countdown of my favorite television series theme songs. Millions of songs, but only 28 made the list. And, of those 28, only one can top the list. Here it is.
#1: Hawaii Five-O - Morton Stevens & His Orchestra
There are theme songs, there are theme songs, and then there’s this. One of the most iconic television themes in history.
In addition to the theme there was a hit version by the Ventures. Then Don Ho had some words put to it for the song “You Can Come With Me.” Sammy Davis Jr. had a similar song, “You Can Count on Me” (no relation to Jefferson Starship’s “Count on Me”).
The remake of the TV show got slapped with a copyright infringement lawsuit because they forgot to ask permission from Morton Stevens’ estate to use the song in the new version. Ooops.
The TV show was about four detectives in a specialized Honolulu Police Department unit. Why only four detectives in the Five-O? Oh, heck, who cares.
It gave us one of the greatest theme songs, and indeed one of the greatest instrumental hits, of all time…as well as one of the greatest catchphrases from TV.
Book ‘em, Danno!
Thanks for reading.

Dad always watched the show but I read through it... I wasn't really interested in "cops and robbers" types of shows.

@FourWalls I mostly remember long, dull conversations and men running all the time. Not my cup of tea.

Never watched or liked Hawaii Five-O but I sure loved Magnum PI with Tom Selleck

I never watched Magnum even though I was stationed in Hawaii when the show was hot. I drove up to the area where it was filmed and took a picture of “Magnum’s house” for my friends.

Understandable. The drummers probably loved playing this song, too!

Yes.
Not saying for sure, but maybe the show's title had to do with the fact that Hawaii was the 50th state?

That was the consensus of the title, according to a news item discussing why it was five zero in the new series but five-O in the original.
Anything to keep us guessing.

Most guys know the exact spot in the song where the slow-mo of the hula dancer comes on the screen. My brother did when he was younger.

I don't think I ever missed an episode of Hawaii 5- 0. Those were the days when you were committed to a show because we couldn't tape it and watch it later on.

Yep, and you watched the rerun in the summer because you knew it’d be the last time you saw it!

I did a tv theme song list a while ago, and this was my favorite one. Great song and show, the original one that it.
I don't like any remakes of old shows/movies. You would think Hollyweird could come up with something new and not remake everything.

I’m enjoying the Night Court reboot, because it’s more of a continuation than a remake. In contrast, I keep hearing ugly rumors about a remake of. Hogan’s Heroes, and I don’t even want to THINK about that, much less take time to watch it. (Of course, they’ve been talking about it for 20 years now, so that gives me hope that it’ll never happen.)

A theme song recorded by The Ventures says it all. Really like that song and the theme fit so well with the beginning video. Interestingly, I was not a frequent watcher
Morton also composed the theme for Gunsmoke, and I did not know that. Pretty cool!
What a great series you put together, so many I like I'm having a tough time keeping up, but eventually I'll get there

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the series. We’re back to movies this month, since you’re having a hard time keeping up.

I wasn’t much on hour-long shows when I was a kid so I didn’t want it. I sure did love that theme song, though!
