A Pie in the Face

Well, in this case, it was a cake in the face. I don’t know how or when this silly antic got started, but it somehow has become tradition to surprisingly hit my son in the face with pie or cake on his birthday every year. He knows it’s coming each year, but doesn’t know who will do it or when. This year, we were all caught by surprise when his girlfriend got him right as he was blowing out his candles. He was totally shocked at who the guilty culprit was this year, and never saw it coming! Thankfully, he’s a really good sport about it all and has a good time with it. This time, though, he got her back since her birthday is the day after his. Have you ever been pied in the face, or done it to someone else? Or do you have any crazy birthday traditions or funny stories to share? Photo is the two lovebirds about to kiss with cake frosting on each of their faces.

What a funny tradition! Can't think of anything like that that we do.

@moffittjc A lot of traditions seem to start accidentally. When our kids were little, Santa always put some fruit along with candy in their stockings. Next morning the kids put the fruit back in the fridge. I think Santa finally quit doing that when the kids got grown, although he still fills their stockings.

@1creekgirl You mean the kids didn’t want the fruit on Christmas morning? Haha I know what you mean. Sometimes traditions are just born accidentally.

The funny thing is, it wasn’t something we ever planned, it just happened one year and we kept it going for some reason. I don’t even know when it first started.

No, I’ve never done the pie in the face routine, although I remember Soupy Sales being infamous for taking them. I also remember Dan Fielding getting a pie in the face in an episode of Night Court.

@moffittjc — I’d give you some salsa in the face. Better for the sinuses and complexion.

I think the only time I ever got a pie in the face was when I did it for a charity fundraiser. My employees could pay a dollar and pie me in the face. We raised hundreds of dollars that day! Lol

I know there was a tradition of the bride and groom smooshing wedding cake in each other's faces, but not someone randomly smooshing birthday cake on someone.

We were joking with the two of them about what we should expect at their wedding. If they’re smashing cake in each other’s faces on birthdays, what’s the wedding going to be like? Lol

@Fleura It’s a silly thing to do, but I guess it’s just a little way to have some fun on your wedding day.

I don't understand this 'tradition' either. If my spouse smashed a cake into my face on my wedding day I would think I had married the wrong person.

@moffittjc That is a different ritual. I have never heard of this before. I have seen people on TV that have had a pie in the face or have had their faces put in a pie. One needs to be ok with it. Does it happen any other time of the year or just on his birthday?

I Mr was never intended to be a ritual or even a tradition. I think it’s just everyone having a good time. The only time of the year anyone ever does this is on his birthday.

Yes. I don't how it all started that some are very happy specifically to couples with cake frosting filling into their faces. Those cake frost should be eat and not wasting it. Just my opinion.

This is yet another one of the new adopted new uses in my country. We did not do it when we were young and neither did my children. But now the grandchildren often do it. I confess I don´t find it amusing, specially if part of the cake reaches the best garments.

@moffittjc I suppose it depends on many things. I usually have only one "best dress". And it lasts a lot and I take great care of it. I can´t imagine it full of cake. There are many things that I enjoy on TV but would not like to do.

It was that way at my wedding too. My bride got me good. But I held back because I knew that she would somehow use that against me many years later. Nothing worse than a woman scorned! Lol

This is something that I have never done and hope it never happens to me. Not that it would not be funny. I would just prefer not to have pie or cake or anything smashed in my face. lol. Very funny his girlfriend surprised him...I am SURE he thought she would not be the one to be the giver of good grief. lol As for any personal family traditions around birthdays, my family has none. But on my wife's side when they sing happy birthday everyone sort of mumbles and slurs all the words, which when combined sounds really weird and gets a laugh every time.

@porwest Very interesting family dynamic it seems. Do you get along well with your wife's side of the family? When I was married, I got along with my wife's family better than I did my own. My parents have now passed, and I'm divorced, but my ex-wife's family still treats me as if I was part of their family.

@moffittjc Yes and no. I mean, it could be a little of both. But the mumbling and slurring is as intentional as the drinking, even if the mumbling and slurring may not be a direct byproduct of the drinking. lol
