Trapped By Snow

United States
March 6, 2023 9:51am CST
Every time I see the news, talking about all the families trapped in their homes due to snow, it really gets me to thinking, no stores, and the one near to I think collapsed. We do get snow, but hardly. The thought of living in a rural area, with nothing really close, and that much snow, doubt one can get deliveries. I started the other day doing canned foods. I recall one year the power went out, and people were just giving food away out of their freezers to keep it from going to waste. One lady gave me a turkey. Our weather has changed indeed.

I keep a few canned items, but no nothing that would last a day or two

@Ronrybs I was raised there. Never thought I'd see snow there. Happy not to be there now.

@popciclecold Yes, I caught the US news this morning, on YouTube, and it looks like more is on the way for California and then moving east across the US.

I don't keep a whole lot of food on hand but, touch wood, I can't foresee a time when I wouldn't be able to get supplies. It would be scary to be running out of food and unable to get more.

The thought scares me. We actually have nothing close to us. We can't even buy a can of coke. Everywhere you have to go you need to travel by car. I know they are not used to that. My heart breaks for them.

@popciclecold Will they drop supplies by air if the situation gets desperate?

Thinking about this makes you think it is good to have tinned foods for emergencies.

Yes, it is scary. Rescuers were going to people homes to help them this morning.

@popciclecold It must be a tough rescue too as driving with that thick snow would be quite a challenge. I hope they manage to rescue everyone.

You are so right, the weather has changed so much. We used to have snow in winter, but this is the second year without snow.

We have enough canned foods to last a couple months or more for the two of us... We also have lots of dried foods stocked away. Both last virtually forever as long as the cans don't rust and the boxed stuff stays dry.

@popciclecold Oh, yeah... You never know when a natural disaster may keep us from being able to get more groceries... Imagine the zombie apocalypse and stock up...

Most people around here know we can lose power for up to a few days if we get a storm. We would be okay as we have lots of canned food and freezer food on hand.

It would be awful to be trapped by snow. It happeed briefly here last winter. This whole area was a mess...no power for 3 days and frigid temps,.

All that snow in California is unbelievable and I agree that the weather has really changed. I also keep extra canned goods on hand just in case. So far this winter hasn't been too bad. We only got a few inches of snow so far and it hasn't even been that cold. Today it's sunny and in the 40s

What you're saying here is one of the reasons why I convinced my hubby that we needed to move. We did get trapped by snow and ice more than once. We put the word out until good people came and plowed out our 2 block long drive way- we paid for the help but we had to first find somebody who would do it. And the water issues. Oh Lordy. Pump freezes from the cold, electricity goes out, no water will be available. That's when your animals get thirsty, when there is no water. Living the rural life can be very tough.

I can relate to those poor people. We suffered through several hurricanes which left our well unusable. No water, no heat, no nothing. We put in a generator several years ago which has proved to be a lifesaver.

It sounds like a very scary situation to be trapped by snow as in those towns in the Sierra Nevadas in California.
