Thursday Evening Mucus…I Mean, Musings

Don’t let anybody think I haven’t enjoyed the unseasonably warm winter we’ve had thus far. The one unfortunate thing, especially around here in the Ohio Valley, is that it comes with a price. That price is pollen.
Trees are blooming out the wazoo. One of our local meteorologists posted one of those joke memes on Facebook about the multiple seasons, and it referred to this particular time as “pollenpalooza.” No kidding!!!
After lunch today I stopped by Wally World and got a new nasal flush device. No, this isn’t an ad for Walmart or a favor because @porwest owns stock. It’s an honest review.
DANG, that’s a nice flusher. Neti pots require neck yoga to get the stuff in and up and back out the other side. The NeilMed squeeze bottle is infinitely better than the neti pot; however, it relies on you to apply just the right pressure to the bottle. The Goldilocks effect: don’t squeeze hard enough and no water gets in; then if you squeeze too hard you set your nostrils on fire.
This bottle, in contrast, has a button on the bottom. You get the saline solution prepared, hold the bottle upside down, put the tip of the bottle in your nostril, then push the button. IT does the work: a steady stream of water. All you have to do is remember not to inhale the water while you’re washing your sinuses out.
It’s also about four bucks cheaper than a NeilMed and easily ten, if not more, dollars less than a neti pot.
The weather is supposed to turn cold this weekend (as in, below the freezing mark for low temperatures), which does tend to complicate matters. Everything that’s blooming will stop…then this process will repeat itself in a month or so.
Oh, well, despite the allergies I don’t have a snotty outlook on life.
I hope y’all have a great evening!!

You could have the same basic process without wasting any money at all... Get your shower as hot as you can stand it. Drop your face into the shower stream and suck water into your nose then spit whatever goes into your mouth into the tub. Repeat this process for both nostrils until nothing is coming out except pure water. Ta-DAA! You're done!

The whole problem of a sinus rinse is that it contradicts a basic law of survival: don’t inhale water!

@DaddyEvil — at this point I’d normally break into a verse of “The Air That I Breathe,” but you don’t know the song.

@FourWalls But, it opens the sinuses so you can do the number one rule of survival. Breathe air.

That would really hurt.
Filtered or distilled water instead of tap.

It’s much easier than a Neti pot, trust me.
Don’t watch before or after or during food.

That looks so much better than a neti pot. I have a neti pot but like you said it isn't that easy to tilt your head to flush out the sinuses. I'll be using mine as soon as they start mowing the lawn here

Haha! Dollar Tree used to carry a knock off of the Netti Pot called a Yeti Pot and it always made me laugh.
But I am not particularily fond of putting stuff up my nose.

I know. I tried a neti pot three times and just couldn’t do it. This is pretty easy and all you have to do is remember to keep breathing through your mouth (as opposed to the neti pot, where you have to breath through your mouth AND tilt your head AND get the pot in the right position AND….
).

Like the song says, if my nose was running money I’d blow it all on you….but it’s not.

The only foreign object I put up my nose is my finger... and it doesn't get anywhere near my sinuses.

Understood. A Kleenex helps keep the finger clean.

The new nasal flush device does do the trick, though it requires neck yoga.

Yes, ma’am, it does. Nasal irrigation takes a little getting used to but it feels great once you do get used to it.

Those 80-MPH winds blowing the pollen around last week didn’t help any. I hope you’re feeling better, too.

I'm glad your new snot-o-matic works well for you. Another problem this summer will be the huge amount of insects due to the mild winter.

That’s already going on. My brother tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick bite. In February.
