Stranded in Australia - the Vienna Boys' Choir

I wrote about a ship being confiscated by Australia after World War II erupted. No doubt there are many stories to be told about such vessels but one concerned the Vienna Boys’ Choir. In 1939, a party of 20 choristers, aged from 8 to 14, dubbed as the ‘Nightingales of Vienna, were on a world tour. After the final concert of the tour in Perth, Western Australia, and due to sail for Vienna next day, they suddenly found themselves ‘enemy aliens’ and were stranded in Australia. Luckily for them, Melbourne’s Archbishop Daniel Mannix, arranged for them to be taken in with local families. They joined the choir of his cathedral. The choirmaster, Dr Georg Gruber, stayed with the visit’s sponsor, Henrietta Marsh, and became a regular in the Melbourne and Sydney musical arenas. However, in 1941, he was arrested and charged with having Nazi links. Along with the choral teacher, Dr Otto Sternberg, he was detained at Tatura Detention Camp until 1947 by which time he was the sole inmate at the camp. He was deported in 1947, cleared by a de-Nazification tribunal, and reunited with his wife and family in Vienna. Shortly after, he emigrated to South Africa to become Professor of Music at Rhodes University. He died in 1979. I’ll write more about a particular choirboy and the tour, as it’s very interesting. The photo is of the Vienna Boys' Choir in Vienna. We were privileged to hear them sing at a Mass there in 2015.

I'm sure there were a lot of people who got stranded when ships were confiscated during the different wars. Some very interesting stories came about that way.

It was bound to happen but somehow I hadn't thought much about it.

@JudyEv Mostly, there are stories of private property in the US confiscated from people of Japanese ancestry during the war.

It’s an interesting story. Terrible that these boys were stranded away from home.Im surprised they were allowed to go on tour at that time.

It seems it might have been a political decision as war hadn't been declared when they left. Cancelling the tour might have sent the wrong message.

@JudyEv There’s usually two sides to every story. Sometimes it’s hard to know what’s best.

I'm sure there are a lot of intriguing tales out there if we only knew about them.

Wars always and only create problems. I am glad that those choristers found an accommodation in Australia.

@JudyEv When you are very young, you adapt easier to a new country.

@LadyDuck That's true. They were quite young to go on such a long tour.

Only one ever went back to Austria to live. The rest ended up staying in Australia.

@JudyEv The movie is named "Almost Angels" or "Born to Sing" in some markets. Some of the child actors were actually members of the choir.

Mom used to buy their christmas albums and would play them for us on Christmas eve. They had such beautiful voices.

Yes they did and probably still do. Mom had a book about them and how they choose those boys, they go through a lot of boys and check that each one they choose has the correct tone.

@JudyEv We rounded up innocent Japanese citizens here and put them in camps. Shameful behavior.

A lot of migrants at the time, especially Italians, were interned too. There were a lot on orchards and market gardens in our south-west and they were rounded up and sent to detention centres in the eastern states.

We were thrilled to hear them perform Mozart's Coronation Mass in a chapel in Vienna. It is a very special memory.
