Some government workers were conducting a census yesterday, and one of them stopped by my shop.
Right away, I could tell she was upset about something, which made the whole conversation feel a little awkward.
She started with the usual questions - how many people live in the house, family details, and so on. But then, completely out of the blue, she started gossiping about one of my neighbors.
She told me that my neighbor already has seven children and is now two months pregnant. Then she went on about how the wife's name is A, but the husband has another woman's name tattooed on his chest. She also commented on how messy their house was.
Apparently, the couple got annoyed when she remarked that their family just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
And honestly, my first thought was: Who wouldn't be annoyed?
I politely told her that some things are really none of our business. Of course, I don't think she picked up on the sarcasm in my voice.
At first, I was planning to offer her a drink, but after all that gossip, I changed my mind. I figured if she could talk about my neighbors that way, she'd probably talk about me when she got to the next house.
It really surprised me because I expected a little more professionalism from someone doing government work.
I’m ranting and I’m sorry.
Have you experienced anything like this from a government worker?

It's okay... Sometimes something bothers us and we need an outlet. It doesn't hurt anyone here and nobody minds.

I don't blame you. That was awful for her to gossip that way. I wonder what she said about you?

@JamesHxstatic I didn't let her in my house. Just outside my store so maybe she would have gossiped about how inhospitable I was

Yes, when trying to set up some services for my first husband when he was ill and dying. The social worker had me in tears. I am with you, this is not the character you would expect in a government employee.

It is reflective of the current government they are working with.

Very unprofessional. But maybe the worker was just having a bad day and needed to vent a little. Just like you did by writing this discussion. I do try giving people the benefit of doubt until they prove otherwise.

@sol_cee Haha, maybe that’s what it was…a bad hair day. I hate when I have a bad hair day!

There are many like her in the government's services. They are not aware that we, the people, are paying their salaries through our high taxes. They even treat other people as beggars. Once, I was irked at one for being rude and I said bluntly. "Stop being rude to people, don't you know that it is these same people who pay for your salary?" and she zipped her mouth shut. Maybe because she realized the truth of my statement.

I have never experienced such thing before. However I feel bad for a government workers to behave like that. Some of them I doubt it whether they learn about ethics.

Inappropriate and unprofessional.
Kudos to you for being the professional one and respecting your neighbor's privacy.
Although I'm not that surprised. In terms of the lack of professionalism, I've seen it happen many times from government employees.
