What a surprise!

Yesterday I had labs to check my blood levels and learned that my white blood count is extremely low. Normal is 4-7, I think, and mine is 1. My Oncologist said if I started running a fever of 100 or more to go right away to the Emergency Department. Sure enough, last night around 10pm I was feeling worse by the minute and found I had a temp of 101. We live an hour away from our really big hospital, but after calling my doctor, we drove there. She said to tell them I am a chemo patient with a fever and very low WBCs, which I did. Did they take me right to a bed? No. We were in that waiting room for five hours. I really didn't know this situation is considered an emergency. My temp had gone down, but several doctors I saw agreed I had to be admitted to the hospital in the cancer center. So, here I am. I'm hoping it won't be for too long, but they want to get my WBCs up. Now waiting for lunch to be brought. Keep me in your prayers, guys. For healing, not for the lunch, lol. It's better than a lot of hospital food I've had.

@RebeccasFarm I 'm still in the hospital. WBC is up to 280 from zero, but my doctor wants me closer to 1,000 which is normal. So going home maybe tomorrow or Friday...who knows.

It was a nightmare! Dale and I were trying to isolate in a corner, but people were puking right on the floor, no telling what all kinds of body fluids were all over. My white blood count for fighting infections dropped to zero and we sat there for over five hours. If I had known how critical my situation was, we'd have left. But glad I finally got admitted. I realize now why my doctor said with a relatively low fever of 100, that I was in danger. I think the patients turned into zombies and took over the staff. It was the nastiest place, I couldn't believe it. And this is the premier hospital in eastern NC. The cancer center that I'm in is beautiful, so is the heart center where I had my lung surgery. It's like that ER is in a separate universe and one I don't intend to ever visit again.

Is that due to an infection? I cannot believe they made you sit there that long. That’s so bad you having to be around all those people and germs especially being sick AND a cancer patient who is recovering from surgery!

@1creekgirl aww poor thing I wonder what was wrong with her. I sat in the ER once with my sick daughter for 4 hours and her fever got up to 105 I was so worried. They were like it’s going up because you’re holding her against you. What was I supposed to do with a sick 2 year old all those hours have her lay on the cold floor?

When the chemo lowered my white blood count to zero, it was an emergency situation where the smallest germ could have killed me. I had no idea at the time or we would have insisted they do something immediately. You wouldn't believe the germs and body fluids that were all around. One poor old lady kept screaming and wailing for at least half an hour. She sounded like someone demon possessed.

Sending prayers for your healing. Five hours - that's just awful and I'm sure you weren't feeling well even when you got there.

@JudyEv Still in the hospital, maybe go home tomorrow? My white blood count is 1.5 but total value of ? is zero which means I have no immunity against germs right now. All that's from the chemo, but now the incision site from the lung removal loos infected. Taking it a day at a time. What date are you leaving for Ireland? I'm sorry, I know I asked you before.

I've come to believe that with cancer "better" is a very subjective word. But I'll take all the betters God will bless me with!

@1creekgirl You're welcome. The high temp means you were struggling with another infection, however minor... The doctors had to find out if it's minor or major before they can treat it and release you again. I'm very glad you waited.

I truly appreciate that, DE. I'm still surprised this was an emergency. After three hours, we seriously considered leaving. Glad now we didn't.

I'm sorry you went through that, and the 5 hour wait on top of it all, but yes, that sort of thing can happen, and it's good you went in right away. I will keep you in prayer dear Vicki. You might want to ask your Dr. - sometimes they can call the ER ahead of when you go in so you don't have to wait in the ER
