It’s top ten time! After looking at the great songs in movies that weren’t nominated for Oscars in alphabetical order, we move on to the top ten. Let’s get rolling with a rock and roll classic that inspired a movie title. #10: Oh, Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison Heck, I could do an entire countdown of song titles that ended up as movie titles. (Spoiler: if I do, the #1 song will be “Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead.”) There’s been a long connection between music and movies. They Might Be Giants took their name from the movie, and on Goodnight Vienna you see Ringo Starr mimicking the final scene in The Day the Earth Stood Still. Here we have a movie inspired by a 1964 Roy Orbison hit. The movie is a cute rom-com with Richard Gere as an executive in need of female companionship on a business trip and Julia Roberts as the prostitute that fills the bill. It’s not the greatest movie I’ve ever seen but I liked it enough. The song, on the other hand, is one of the great classics of rock and roll. Some of you (looking toward Olney, Illinois) might know the Van Halen cover of this. But ol’ Diamond Dave couldn’t match the brilliance of Roy Orbison. Not with the delivery and especially not with the growl. Oh, another spoiler: Roy will be back for next month’s countdown, too. Oh, Pretty Woman Written by Roy Orbison and Bill Dees Recorded by Roy Orbison From Pretty Woman, 1990 Mercy!

It’s no Godfather but I’m not sorry I saw it. There are quite a few movies I can say I wish I hadn’t seen, but Pretty Woman isn’t one.

@marguicha — I was thinking more in terms of the quality of the movies than the actual genre. Bringing Up Baby is an early incarnation of the romantic comedy and it’s an absolute classic.

When you can include a Roy Orbison song on any countdown it's a plus "You Got It" right including this classic!

@FourWalls nope that’s why I got rid of the VHS tapes and then saw a VHS /cvs player combo not long after. I was bummed to have gotten rid of it.

The important question is, do you have anything with which to watch a VHS tape anymore?

Nah, the love of his life was Claudette, whom he wrote a song about (and the Everly Brothers recorded). She was killed in a motorcycle wreck in 1968.

Yes, I do recognize this song... Don't ask me why, though. I have no clue.

Well, I did like Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman, but Louis Gossett Jr. is the one who MADE that movie.

That movie would have been half of what it was without the song! BTW, I have watched many times and it is one of my favorite movies. I loved there everything, from the dresses to the "fairy godfather"

There are a lot of movies that are truly enhanced by their soundtrack. I wonder if I would have liked The Big Chill as much if the music hadn’t been so good.

Great song. Roy's version is the only version I care for. The video for the Van Halen version works much better if one is in an altered state of mind.

I think most of Van Halen’s David Lee Roth material needs an altered state of mind.

Way back when someone had a sound wave of Roy’s growl in this song and would play it in AOL chat rooms.

Wasn't Roy jusst the greatest? Vince saw him in Perth as the lead-up to Dylan. Can you believe it? But once Roy finished the crowd wouldn't let him off the stage and in the end they just had to bring Dylan on.

You had me at Roy Orbison. I definitely love the song and honestly thought the movie was boring. I don't think I even watched it all the way through. All I could think is why do people think this is good?
