The most frustrating eye doctors office

I’ve never liked going to the doctors and this eye doctors office makes me like it even less! My stepson failed his vision test at school and needed an exam for that as well as for his driving permit. I got him an appointment and they concluded he should use glasses for driving. While they would help him a little all the time he really didn’t have to wear them except for driving. He decided he wanted contacts to wear daily. During the exam they found he has a large optic nerve which could be glaucoma like his father has or just something he was born with that is common. In order to get contacts he needed to make an appointment to come back to get a contact fitting done. So I made the appointment and scheduled the optic nerve test appointment immediately after so I wouldn’t have to make two appointments and drive 30+ miles one way. I took him to that next appointment and they ordered his contacts. Once the contacts were in they scheduled us an appointment for the optic nerve test and to get his contact fitting finished up. I got him to his appointment for that Tuesday and THEN when they get there they tell me the machine has been down for a few weeks and so he is only having the contact fitting final appointment instead and will call me and have me bring him back in when the machine is fixed. The doctor had told us he doesn’t give kids monthly contacts that he does daily. My husband doesn’t want to spend that much money on daily’s he wants his son to use monthly’s like he does. The doctor said this fitting was for dailies and he doesn’t recommended the dailies and if we wanted him to have them we have to make yet another contact fitting appointment and then a follow up appointment for that as well! Insurance doesn’t cover this it was $170. I asked if there is a difference in the contacts why he would need another fitting and he said yes the material is a little different. The heck with that we now have his the prescription for contacts and my husband will order the monthly’s online. I will take him back for the occular test and then will be very happy not to have to see them again for another year with their constant appointments trying to make as much money off us as possible. Photo is unrelated to the post. I saw this at a thrift store I went to today and thought it would be really nice in my kitchen as a spice rack. I will have to see about buying or building one.

Wow! I didn't have that much trouble when I was fitted for contacts and glasses... I wanted both so I had the option of wearing them all day or just taking my glasses off when I wasn't driving. I don't need help if I'm not driving, either.

@Daddyevil glasses are covered by the insurance so it would have saved quite a bit of money to get them instead but I left it up to my husband to decide and he said whether his son wanted so we went with the contacts.

@shaggin Well, he's paying for it, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

I'm the type who would never wear contacts. The thought of having to put something on the eye ball and constantly keep clean is way too complicated for me. I have reading glasses that are nice. My husband on the other hand has worse vision than I do and wears contacts all the time and loves them.

@LeaPea2417 I am way to squeamish I could never wear contacts. My stepson isn’t the cleanest I’m nervous he will get an eye infection or something using the monthly’s.

@LeaPea2417 yep that makes me so nervous too. My stepson comes home after school and sleeps until late then gets up and stays up until the wee hours. I go to bed at 1 usually and he’s up later than me. I doubt he will take his contacts out before he naps. My husband used to sleep with his in for years it always scared me.

@shaggin another reason I would never wear them is you should not fall asleep in them. My husband has on occasion, fallen asleep in them but luckily didn't sleep long before he realized they were still in.

First thing I was thinking why didn't they call you and tell you the machine was broken? Daily and monthly contacts? Never new that, the people that I have known that have contact's have permanant one's. Good luck with that.

@dfollin that’s exactly what I said to them was why didn’t they call me. They just went on telling me the hassle about this machine repair. The part has to be shipped here then a guy has to be flown in from Florida to fix it.

I didn't know it was so complicated to get contacts. Nice spice rack. Are you going to build one?

@celticeagle this is a cupboard but I think it would make a nice spice rack don’t you? I’m thinking after seeing this I may ask my husband to build me one or let me buy one since it would probably be years before he finishes something he starts .

@celticeagle why would you do that? Wondering if I need to consider that in the making of it.

I suffer of glaucoma and because of this problem I CANNOT wear contact lens. I am surprised that this doctor prescribes contact if he suspects that your step son has glaucoma... find another one.

@LadyDuck interesting about the optic nerve. My stepson doesn’t have high pressure so they aren’t too worried but the doctor just wants to rule out glaucoma. My husband had retinal detachment at 12 and had cataract surgery. Same with his sister.

@shaggin An enlarged optic nerve does not necessary cause glaucoma, should it become damaged it could. Ocular hypertension is glaucoma and this must be treated. I had laser surgery and I have to put drops in my eyes every day. It is very dangerous if not treated.

Get your husband or step son to build you one. At least the boy won't be able to use bad vision as an excuse not to do so

I hope he is responsible enough to wear them. Kids that age aren't exactly known for that, and he sounds he is less responsible than most. I think I would stress that these were not cheap, and if he is losing them or comes down with an infection from improper cleaning he will be wearing glasses.

@snowy22315 he doesn’t take care of anything no matter how much it costs so I don’t see this going well. I am worried with how unsanitary he and his father are that he will get an infection. Lots of kids get them at this age and it is fine so I will just have to hope for the best. They aren’t supposed to be slept in and he comes home from school and sleeps for hours then stays up late at night. That always freaked me out so bad when my husband would sleep in them.

@snowy22315 he had a pair years ago and lost them in two days (he probably threw them away) and refused to wear them anyway so we never bothered to go get him more.

@shaggin Well, yeah my guess is it isn't going to last long...might as well make an appointment to get glasses now... Of course he will probably lose those too.

@RebeccasFarm hopefully not. His father has it and has since a young age same as his sister. The condition they were born with causes it. We didn’t know any of them had until the baby had genetic testing done and it showed she has this condition she gets from her father.

@rakski it isn’t right they are trying to make so much money off people. They wanted us to order the contacts from them too and it would be $600. I’m interested to see how much my husband winds up paying ordering them online with the company he uses.

Sorry about all the trouble that you had to go. Sad that doctors milk any situation that you have to make more money . I like the rack. It's multifunctional and can be used in any corner of the house that you want.

@arunima25 hopefully the occular test is covered by insurance. Ridiculous in order to get contact he has to have the fitting yet insurance doesn’t cover it. To me rose says it isn’t necessary.

@GardenGerty a simple phone call wouldn’t have been hard. If I was not going to make it they would be mad if I didn’t call and would be me anyway. One more appointment when the machine is fixed then hopefully I’ll be free of them.

One of my relatives loved his contact lense so much, but had to stop wearing them after about a decade due to eye infection (caused by the in/out of the contact lense and the cleaning fluid). Last I heard, he had to have a surgery due to that eye infection. Hope everything goes smoothly from now on for you (as a taxi driver .)
