Got quite the scare yesterday. A fire broke out near my parent's house. I had stayed here for a long time before moving out to my own place. Spent the weekend there and then went home to my own place in the morning. At around noon, I got a call from my younger brother that a fire broke out. There are informal settlers near my parent's place and that is where the fire started. Our home was spared but it received considerable water damage. My old room and my parent's room were the most damaged. Investigators said that an overcharged mobile phone was the cause of the fire. This isn't the first time that a fire broke out in the area. Previous years it was a gas tank that was left open and then there was also an incident of a person living in the area brinign home an old World War 2 bomb that exploded when they were tinkering with it. All things considered, I'm thankful because no one got hurt in our family and our home was spared from the fire. It will take awhile before we get to stay at home though. There is still no electricity and we have to check the circuits if there are no damages before the electricity is turned on again. As for now, I booked an AirBnB room nearby, for them to stay there. So fellow myLotters, please, please, please be careful nowadays and take extra precaution in preventing fires.

I am so very sorry to read this Allen and I am so glad that your parents survived My God this is devastating. Yes the wiring surely must have had something to do with this, as a phone charger usually is safe. But yeah any tech things today can catch fire.

@allen0187 It surely is devastating and how will your parents be able to do this? Will they be able to stay with you or brother? Or somewhere?

I'm glad everyone is safe and your home is saved from the fire. Yes, it's the dry season, so there will be cases of fires again. I hope your family will recover soon enough from the damage and get back to normal life again. Keep going.

Luckily there was no fireworks there, I often see news that is very terrible if in large quantities it has the effect of blowing up a village.

Mobile phones can cause damages, they are like bombs when they explode. I am glad that your family are safe and the fire did not damage your house. I hope they will be back home soon.

I’m so sorry about the damage but I’d never heard of overcharging a cell phone or anything. I leave computers and phones plugged up when I’m not using them. Are you sure that can cause a fire. If so I’ll kee mine unplugged.

That is what my mom told me. Although, I was able to talk to some people who live in the area. The common belief is that the fire was set on purpose. So although, an overcharged mobile phone may not cause fire that big, combustible materials were also left in the area so the fire will spread faster.

@allen0187 wow, that’s bad. Who would have purposely set the fire? Surely not a neighbor.

@allen0187 That is good to know. I can imagine the smell of burnt houses will stay there for long. My Grandfather's house burned too and all those salvage things from there had that distinct smell that does not easily go away.

Oh my gosh the worst of those fires is from the World War Two bomb. Gosh what were they thinking! Why was your parents home damaged by water if they don’t live in the same building?

They live in townhouses. The fire was in an area of informal settlers located at the back of my parent's place. The houses at the back caught fire and although there was a wall separatign the two areas, the wall wasn't tall enough to contain the fire. Best location where the fire fighters can be is in my parent's room (2nd floor) and in my previous room (3rd floor) becuase our rooms' windows are overlooking the fire. Hence the water and smoke damage was worst in those two rooms.

Glad everyone is alright. Cooking is the major cause of fires almost 50% which I found surprising. Followed by heating then electrical systems which I thought would be 1 and 2. My brother lost his home to an electrical fire, very scary!!!
