Time to get serious

Eons ago I was active in the literary world. The city that I lived in at the time was just starting to set up poetry readings. Even though I was busy with my paying job of helping folks in their homes, I found the time to attend some readings. I also sought out small presses and submitted my work. A few poems were published- made my Mom very happy.
Here I am in another life, another city, older and creaky-cranky. Last Autumn I ran into a lady who sometimes wanted to attend a literary gathering that is held about an hour to the South of us. She drove the night freeway and I tried to help keep her awake.
Last Autumn she and I signed up to read in the Spring. Guess what? The Spring is here. Flowers are starting to pop up. About a week and a half from now that night will be here. Ooooops. I need to figure what I will read. I need to find my Reading Voice- no sounding like a frightened bitty mouse. And I need to dig out chapbooks that might be wanted by folks who have money in their pockets. I will also go over my book of short stories and see if I want to read a passage from one of them. My time allotment is twenty minutes. Oh groan there. That is a long time. Anyway, best get at it.

@shaggin The Yule Tales are something that I snail mail every December to about 30 or 35 people- friends and family. The book that has past Tales in it you can find on Amazon.com by looking up my name. If you want to be on the snail mail list you just need to private message me your address.

@shaggin Yes two chapbooks. They sit on Amazon. I write Christmas short stories each winter and send them to folks. One year my daughter and husband surprised me- they had gathered all the Tales into one book. That book of Tales sits on Amazon, too.

Sounds like you have an assortment to choose from. Practice your 'reading voice'. You'll be fine. I sure enjoyed to story you sent me last year. And, if a story is too long you could revise a bit.

@sol_cee For me it takes an effort to find my Reading Voice. If I am not careful my voice descends into a croaky whisper. I practice reading out loud before I go and imagine myself standing tall with a microphone in front of me.

Congrats, and good luck with your book-reading event. I know you will swing it through. I hope you have a compilation of your poems and stories. They would be excellent companions during old age, not only for you, but for other poetry lovers too.
