Who knew? Tick Bites can make you allergic to red meat?

Imagine getting bitten by a tick or ticks, and then having a good hamburger meal later and waking up in a lot of pain with nausea. Sounds like food poisoning, but it's probably that tick bite. It's called alpha-gal syndrome but doesn't affect only "gals." Most cases are caused by "Lone Star" ticks, but it's not just in Texas. Ticks aren't prevalent in my area, but if they were, I would take every precaution to avoid them. Have you ever had a Tick bite?
Patients who have digestive symptoms only after eating red meat may have developed an allergy caused by ticks. Previously, doctors looked for symptoms such as rashes, hives and breathing troubles.

I often got ticks when I was a kid, playing with our outside dogs and riding our horses around the countryside. I haven't had one since I was in my mid-20s, though. (Maybe 35 years ago.)

@JamesHxstatic I was always too busy to take Pretty out into the woods to show her what that's like. The few times we went "camping", I drove somewhere and we slept in the back of our hatchback cars and looked at the clouds and stars until we fell asleep.

Yes. Pork too. I know 2 people personally who can no longer eat beef or pork due to being bitten by Lone Star ticks.

Oh my goodness. This sure brings back memories. When I was a small child and living at my grandmother's I got a tick bite in a very private area. How I don't know. My mom and grandmother poured coal oil over the area and used tweezers to get rid of the tick. It hurt so badly. Ugh!

I have never heard of that . . . oh gosh I can't imagine having to eliminate red meat from my diet for good. They say to watch out for ticks when we hike, but I've never encountered one - I don't think .

@JamesHxstatic Maybe so. I guess when a tick bites, it sticks to you . . . never had anything like that happen here.

I never had a tick bite, but I regularly remove ticks from the neck of my cat. He goes outside and he visits other gardens.

The only time we saw ticks was when we had dogs but we got rid of them. We never got bitten

I can believe that alright. Once you have a foreign substance enter your body, you can develop all sorts of terrible side effects. Just like covid did to people..

I'm sure I have. But I don't remember a recent tick bite. We have lots of ticks here. We worry about Lyme Disease.

I haven't heard of this happening here but I guess it does. Thankfully we're rarely exposed to ticks.

Same here. I ran around out in the pastures of west Texas as a kid. I guess it was too dry & hot for ticks there.
