Have you ever stayed in a themed hotel?

I bought the other half a pair of concert tickets in January for his birthday. We finally got to go to the show last weekend and stayed in San Francisco overnight. Staying in the city isn't the easiest to plan, as the places I can afford are usually either sketchy or too noisy, so I went with one of the places that the concert venue suggested that fit within my budget: Music City Hotel -- Home of the San Francisco Music Hall of Fame. This is largely a hostel for traveling European twenty-somethings on a budget (shared dorm room style with bunk beds), but they also have private rooms that have themed decor based on well-known Bay Area musicians. Each room even comes with a guitar and amp, so if you feel like rocking out in your room, you can! It's totally allowed! While you could definitely hear people playing music and such in their rooms while walking through the hallway, we couldn't hear them in our rooms, so we didn't have to worry about disturbing anyone's sleep. We got to stay in the Green Day room, although we could have chosen the Metallica room or the Grateful Dead room. The Janis Joplin room would have been nice, as it has a private bathroom (the others did not, but those guests shared a restroom and gender-separate shower rooms), but it was considerably more than the others and quite a bit out of my budget. It was quirky but fun! We had never stayed in a themed room before, so this was a novel experience for us both. The room also came with free breakfast vouchers that we used at a corner coffee shop in the neighborhood, and we could have gone on a musically themed walking tour of San Francisco for free if we hadn't had the concert to attend. The hotel also had some of the nicest, friendliest customer service I've dealt with. If the opportunity comes up, I'd definitely stay here again! I uploaded a short video of our room on TikTok, I'll leave the link in case anyone cares to see it.

Never stayed in a theme room or hotel but would love to. We are looking at staying at one of the hotels runned by Lego and having a Lego themed room for our kids while staying there. Looking at the New York location since it's closer to where we live. My husband is starting a new job after being hour for a little over a year, so we are going to work to save up to go during one of the kids breaks once he has PT time saved up.

@spiderdust We live close enough to Hershe park as well but they don't have fun hotels like that. I know Disney does but at my kids ages doing Disney right now wouldn't work. We fingered in a few more years our youngest will be in middle school and our older two will be High school so doing Disney than might be better since we can send them on and pick a meeting place. Legoland, I have hard is fun and it seems with my youngest food allergies that it would be easy to go and do. There is also great wolf that has some nice semi themed room great for if you want a winter feel. I know if we go to George town they have some rooms there that are done up more colonial style. My husband and I have saved there before.

That would be really exciting! Your kids will have a ball. I've never been to any of the Legolands yet.

@ShyBear88 I didn't know about the colonial rooms at Georgetown! I'd love to take the family to Great Wolf Lodge sometime. One recently opened up within 4 hours of here, so I need to see how expensive it would be for all of us. I see Groupons for it all the time.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I've stayed at bed and breakfasts but nothing themed like you describe.

This was my first experience at a themed hotel, with the exception of staying in one of the Disneyland hotels years ago.

This sounds really interesting. I love Janis so staying in that room would be fun. I would enjoy going back to SF and be able to see it this time with my daughter and grandson.

@just4him I usually like a good firm mattress myself, but this felt hard. I may have also been extra sore already.

Admittedly the mattress was a little bit harder than I would have preferred, but that often happens at hotels. It's also an older historical building, so there were no elevators. Still, I would go again!

Slightly off topic, but a memory hit me and I just had to ask, have you ever gone to or stayed at the Hotel del Coranado? When my sister lived in San Diego, she splurged and we did 2 nights there. Fascinating place, a time to remember I will always treasure. Glad you had a get-a-way with your family, it's always so nice to do something special.

I have not, but I know which hotel you mean. I've seen it, but never stayed there. I'd like to avoid that bridge though!

@MarieCoyle It looks absolutely terrifying! I think I'd have to be sedated to go across it.

@spiderdust That bridge was the brain child of either a genius or an idiot. I thought it was terrifying!

Haven't had the pleasure of staying in a themed hotel. I would love to stay in a Metallica themed room.

If you ever come to San Francisco, you now know where to find one, complete with a guitar and amp in the room!

This is interesting, we never stayed in a themed hotel. I have been in an old Monastery that is a bed and breakfast in Portugal and in an old Castle, also in Portugal.

@spiderdust The castle was "intimidating". I cannot say that I really enjoyed, I like more a modern hotel.

How was the castle? I have stayed overnight in a former abbey before. This was in Joliet, IL.

That really does sound nice! I'm glad you and your hubby had a good time and enjoyed your stay there. Years ago, Pretty and I rented a room in an animal preserve. The room was actually a treehouse in the middle of the free-ranging park with lions and cheetahs. The windows and doors were barred and the big cats had ledges on the outside to lie on and watch us moving around and sleeping inside the room. (We were locked into the room at night and couldn't open the door until the staff came the next morning to let us out of our "cage".) I think we spent most of the night watching the big cats watch us... I believe I paid $100 for the night. There were two beds, a kitchenette and a bathroom without a shower. Everything except the bathroom was all open-plan so the cats could see us no matter where we were at... or we could see the cats no matter where we were at. We really enjoyed it. We haven't been there in years but I know the preserve is still functioning... It's called Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. I worked at KFC at the time and they donated tons of chickens to the preserve for the big cats every year. Walmart also donated different types of stuff the sanctuary needed throughout the year.

@spiderdust It really is a great place. The last time we were there they were expanding the fenced in area for the big cats. They also had deer loose on the main grounds and some rescued monkeys and apes in huge cages along with two ligers.

@DaddyEvil It looks like these days it's $200 per night for the treehouse, but that's still a really good price for the experience. How did you find out about it when you went?

It was definitely fun. The hotel also has rehearsal studios (they were closed during COVID quarantine and have recently reopened) for people who want to form bands.

Sounds and looks like fun. Thanks for the video. I think the Janis Joplin room would have been interesting. I would have to have a private bathroom. I'm quirky that way. Glad you had a good time. I've never stayed in a themed hotel.

I usually prefer having a private bathroom, but I considered this part of the experience and just rolled with it. We were only there for one night anyway, so we managed. I know many hotels in Europe also have shared restrooms and shower rooms in the hall rather than en suite/in the room.

@spiderdust I'm really funny about a "public" bathroom. I couldn't handle it even for one night.

I don't remember one. But I know staying in a theme hotel is cool.
