A musical bridge at Bellacorrick, Mayo, Ireland

While we were in Ireland, our son took us to the Bellacorrick Bridge. It’s called a ‘musical bridge’ and spans the Owenmore River. When it was constructed around 1820, it was the largest and best-built bridge in Mayo.
To produce music, you can either roll a stone along the parapet or strike a stone on the parapet coping. There are four elliptical arches, nine metres apart.
The bridge was built during the Great Famine. Legend has it that the three men remaining at the end of the task were too weak to lift the last coping stone into place. The bridge remains unfinished thus bringing true the prophecy made during the 17th century by the Erris prophet Rua U ‘Cearbhain, who said that the bridge would never be finished.
Vince tried to ‘play’ the bridge but it was raining and very windy so he remains in two minds as to the truth of its musicality.
Photo of the bridge is mine.

@JudyEv I'm going to have to look up "heather" I was first exposed to it in the the Winnie the Pooh stories of my childhood. "Gorse and heather." In the US, much of western North Dakota and Eastern Montana are infertile--better for natural gas and rattlesnakes than crops. I think of "the islands" as eternally rainy and green, but I have never been there.

I was going to ask you what does the musical bridge sound like, but I guess you never got to find out. :0( That's too bad.

We didn't persevere long enough to get a note out of the bridge. It's interesting listening to the link.

At first, I thought they had etched out musical notes on the bridge wall...so that people could look them up and play on whichever instrument they had. But I do believe some engineering that we have lost, existed through which they could produce musical notes. Maybe not as perfect as we have today but still good enough.

I've heard of a bridge that if you drive over it at a certain speed it plays a song, but I can't remember if this is true or something I read in a novel.

So the rains and the winds cancelled your plans to "test" the Bridge !
Do enough tourists visit this Bridge?
This is another of the interesting sites that you shared from your Ireland visit.

Please don't be in two minds about it. We have an even more ancient temple ...built in 15th century.
I have practically played on those whatever you call them in your English. A tad off tune, but you can discern the seven notes.
Vittala temple of Hampi...

@JudyEv The guide was able to show us different instruments sounds ..resembling our traditional instruments, but even he was not able to get the notes perfect...LOL...when I tried, I was barely able to get even that kinda perfection...I guess training is needed for playing on those. No it did not pain. Which was what was strange.

That’s so cool! There’s a place that has “rumble strips” in the road so they’ll play “America the Beautiful” if you drive over it at 45 MPH.
I watched some videos. It does sound like a xylophone at places.

@JudyEv — trying to play heavy metal instead of a melodious tune.

It's interesting looking and has a good story... well, sort of... but I do wish Vince could have played the bridge.

@JudyEv I totally understand. I'm surprised he made it out of the car in the first place.

I think it is just notes...that is possible. So you would have to practice a lot to get a tune.
We have one at Hampi - Vittala temple. The guide was able to get notes better than I. But I too got it, though it sounded like...an instrument that needed to be tuned.
The guide tried to explain that they used to make thin stone pillars, and perhaps insert a metal in it, and there would be enough gap in upper part for some vibration. But how they got the notes is something even he could not explain.
Science and belief are two different things, but at times they collide and there is no explanation to it. Belief at times is supported by scientific findings, but then, there are no clear lines here. There are occasions when we see something that has no sc
