A Bittersweet Day for Celebration, but Yes, Celebrate!

My mom and Me

It is wonderful when we have a mother to celebrate! My late mother, pictured with me as a child, was my best friend. I am so blessed to have had a mother who loved me unconditionally, but wasn't afraid to correct me when she thought I needed a firm hand in my life. I'm sure she's enjoying another Mother's Day in Heaven with her own mother. Yesterday, I met my dad's wife (Diana) at the movie theater to see a movie ("Roll With It") that was only playing for a few days this month - that she really wanted to see, and I told her it would be her Mother's Day gift. On behalf of me and my sister, I also showed up and surprised her with flowers and a card, and she had to gather herself so she wouldn't cry. I am very glad I could help make her day special. Do you all have women in your life that are also mother figures besides your actual mother? Is your own mother still with you? I'd love to see pictures.

What a wonderful photo. My mother is no more with me, she lived a very long life, but she went to Heaven 4 years ago. The mother of my husband was like my second mother, but she also no more. This is the sad part of aging.

Yes, it is. Aging takes away so much.

My mother is in heaven, she's so much happier today that ever before! Your mother was lovely and you were a very beautiful baby!

That was a very sweet thing you did for your step-mother. My mother passed away in April of 2019 and I remember that first Mother's Day standing in the greeting card aisle looking at the Mother's Day cards and then remembering I didn't have a mother with me anymore. My oldest sister is 14 years older than me and she can sometimes be a mother figure, mostly when I was growing up. She gave me some great advice.

@AmbiePam Our thoughts were it was a blessing she passed before we hit covid and she would have been in a long term care unit with no family being able to visit. She was 94.

I’m glad you had your sister. Yes, it must have been weird that first Mother’s Day without your mom.

@patgalca I feel you. My mom passed on May fourth. But it was eight years ago. Your mom passed right before Covid so there was probably a lot of time to think about it.

What a cute tot you were! Very ice pic of you and mom. Umm, not really, my mom is it. She sent me a photo of herself today with the cat shirt on that I had given her. I put mine on as well, although I wasn't planning to. I will give her a call later.

There's a lady at church who I call my "surrogate mom". Unfortunately didn't get to see her today, as I was sick and stayed home from church.

I'm glad you made your dad's wife's day special. I'm sorry your mother has passed away. My mother has passed away and my parents disowned me when I moved out at 21; so I don't have any mothers or mother figures in my life. Wishing you a good week.

Oh, certainly not. No one can every take the place of our mother. I didn't even get Diana a card for years after she married my dad because it felt so weird. I think both of our mothers are simply irreplaceable.

At my age, I'd be battling to find a 'mother figure' but there is one day whose opinion I value. She is a good friend too.

I live right next to my mom, she is a wonderful mother and I feel blessed for having her in my life. I still have one grandmother (my father's mom) and she deserves a special hug on mother's day.

That was such a beautiful thing to do for your step mom. No, mom passed in 2015 and since I'm old there aren't any mother figures around anymore.

You had a sweet mother Amber, so lucky that you had the relationship that you shared with her also. That is rare. The most influential lady in my life was my Dad's mother, my Gramma. She taught me so much, and she had such a sweet and gentle way about her, but like your mother, I learned the difference between right and wrong with her as well. That is important as they love us so much that they want us to be respectful. I thought that I had scanned an old black and white of me as a young child and my grandparents, and I searched for it on my computer, but wasn't able to find it. But in my heart her memory and the scent of Rose Milk hand lotion are very vibrant and alive.

I'm glad you had a wonderful day yesterday with your dad's wife. I'm glad you made her heart happy with your gift. My mother is in eternity. This is a four-generation picture. My grandmother is seated, my mother on her left, and me on her right, holding my daughter. Today, my daughter is also a mother and grandmother.
