It's official we have a bear in the neighborhood

One of the people who lives maybe half a mile from here but in this development posted that a bear had taken down her bird feeder, well what she assumed was one. Someone else got video footage of it. That is why I don't put bird feeders up in the summer. I don't want to do anything to attract bears to the property. Normally, they don't pose a threat to humans, but I don't want to test the theory. I know I heard one when I was out on the porch a few years ago, and it didn't sound to be in a good mood. I think I am going to go back to bringing my walking stick on walks.

I'm glad you're careful. We know there are bears in the wooded areas around our city but, so far, nobody has seen one in the city. We're told all the time on radio and television not to feed the bears and not to leave dog or cat food out for pets after it gets dark.

@DaddyEvil It was just passing through. I don't even know he knew I was there, if he did, he didn't care. It was a strange looking animal really the color of a fox, but huge like a coyote. I almost wonder if it was some kind of hybrid

@snowy22315 Just be careful, please. Coyotes normally run from people. They would try to take your dog or cat if your pets are small enough.

Be careful, they usually do not attack humans, but it happens that they do. A bear killed a runner last month in Italy. Well how can someone be so dumb to run in the woods, wild animals attack those who run.

Yeah, like any animal, they can be territorial. Although it was a number of years ago, I read about a woman who lived in a more mountainy area who got attacked just going to the mailbox. I think she had her cell with her, Thank goodness, because she had a broken thigh and a number of other injuries. Those kinds of things are a rarity, but you don't want to be the exception to the rule!

@LadyDuck You don'r have to step on them, just your scent in their territory could be enough, or maybe you startle them when they were doing something else, and it is just kind of a reflexive bite, like you see with pets sometimes.

For the most part they are more scared of you then you are of them, but there are cases where they have attacked people, either they have cubs or they think the person has some food.

@kaylachan There was a guy from Florida in an apt. Complex feeding iguanas and making all of his neighbors mad

@snowy22315 Yeah, I know. I am just saying, and teasing a bit. We don't really have much in the way of wildlife we worry about on the regular, but gators have been known to get in local lakes and even people's swimming pools. We had a gator in a manmade lake in an apartment complex we used to live at. A neighbor, posted on Facebook (after we were alerted about it by management) we should keep it and name it Fluffy. George got a laugh out of it when I showed him the post.

Be careful. Bears have the habit of scratching and spitting.

Bears can be very dangerous. There are many found in Gatlinburg but not in this area.

They can be, but fortunately usually aren't. I remember reading about one on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a year or two ago that attacked some picnickers. I have had picnics there too.

We had a few bears visit us when we lived in Montana. We never left our garbage outside, and did not put out bird seed or suet feeders, etc. The ones we did see during that time never lingered, they moved on to find their treats elsewhere. I remember one guy left his lunch in his truck all night. The bear got inside the truck cab and trashed it to get that lunch.

It makes me kind of nervous about barbecuing outside. You know the scent might bring one, but it never has before.

@snowy22315 That would make me nervous as well. The scents linger for a long, long time from food cooking on a grill. Just be as careful as you can be. It's all you can do.

I only see bears in the zoo. If I see them in person, I think I will be frozen

I wouldn't be doing anything to encourage bears - or antagonise them! At least we don't have them here, whatever else we might have

One thing I kind of worry about is one thinking they smelled something in the house, because I keep my back storm door open it locks and has a screen in place...and coming up and breaking through the deck and getting stuck or something, Now that would be weird!

What I know about bears is that black bears are very shy being around humans. Just never show them food because it bring them to the meal that they see.

I've heard that you should never run from a bear, to stand still and look the other way, just saying, in case you see a bear.

I would probably make noise and try to scare it away. If it was far from me, I would stand still and look away.

They are mostly out in the evening, This is a heavy duty stick. It would give a good thump if needed, However, the bears don't come out that often during the day. They prefer evenings or early in the morning. I saw one one time when we were camping..It was out combing the hillside. It was maybe 8 or 9 AM.

No bears in my neighborhood thank goodness. They can create quite a mess scrounging around for food. I've watched video of bears going into homes and raiding the kitchen. It's not a pretty sight!
