Keeping the cold at bay

My husband, Vince, has been away for most of the week. He went with his brother to take bicycle parts to a great nephew who is travelling across Australia by bike and raising funds for CanTeen, a cancer charity. He had been having a lot of punctures and had also broken a pedal. After he got going again, they followed him for a day to make sure the problems had been fixed. The total distance is 3,934 kilometres (2,444 miles). The hardest part, apart from city riding, is crossing the Nullarbor where the only services are around 321 kms (200 miles) apart. The two men slept in a tent. Vince had a camp stretcher and sleeping bag and his brother an air mattress. Part of their equipment was this ‘pig’ fire. I think it must have been cold that night as they obviously had the fire stoked up with flames shooting out the top. You can see the custom-made trailer in the background.

I'm glad Vince and his brother made it home okay and the trip was a success. Hopefully, the rest of your nephew's trip will be fine now that things have been fixed. Good luck to him and his teammate. It looks like their flue is starting to burn through. I hope it lasts the full trip. Tell Vince that it's a good photo. Thanks for sharing it.

@JudyEv Oh, I misunderstood. I thought it was him and a friend making the ride together. I hope hitching a ride there isn't as dangerous as it can be here.

@DaddyEvil It would mostly be okay. It would probably have to be a truckie as he'd need a lift for his bike too.

He doesn't have a teammate but that's okay. It's just him and he's on his own now. If he hits more trouble, he'll have to hitch a ride to a town.

I hope you're ok with him gone for a few days. Men seem to love being out in the wilderness, well, when they're young that is.

I understand, I always do as I please and wouldn't know how to cope if someone lived here with me.

I was pleased to have a few days on my own. Sometimes it's nice to just do whatever you want to do without having to consider someone else.

At my age, which I acknowledge is not old in the big picture, I would also need an air mattress to survive a camping trip. God bless Vince for making such an effort.

Air mattresses aren't always very good and Vince's back troubles him so he had a camp stretcher with a foam pad over it. The two brothers enjoyed the trip in the main but it was a long way.

3,934 kilometres (2,444 miles)! That's a lot! It's like touring a whole island. The distance between my city and my hometown is 461.4 Km and we travel this for 14 hours by bus. I admire how resilient your husband's great-nephew is, in doing this for cancer victims. It must have taken them days to traverse the distance. Good luck to him and to the accompanying support team.

Thanks for the good wishes. He doesn't have a support team but needed some parts so that's why Vince and his brother went out to him. He carries whatever he needs on his bike. He had a friend drop off two food parcels at a couple of the roadhouses.

3924 Km is a very big number! So I believe that staying somewhere open in night would mean it's going to be very cold. I believe that the places where they camp during night are safe from the criminals. If we were to do something like this in India, fear if criminals would be a factor. Best of wishes to Vince and his brother for a successful journey!

It's unlikely you'd come to harm but sometimes people go off the road a short distance. Because it's so far between towns/service stations, there are often other campers at the camping areas so you feel safer because of that.

That is really tough going. Would there be any dangerous animals out there?

No, maybe dingoes but they aren't normally in packs and are very wary of humans. For motorists, the danger is hitting a 'roo, camel or horse on the road but that wouldn't worry a cyclist.

They are heros! And I, as a person who has cancer in complete remission, thank them in a special way. Cancer is an ailment that can be cured if we are lucky. But anyway the costs are great. In my country a part of the cost is paid by the government but still it is very expensive.

They arrived back yesterday thanks and the lad was going well. He was having a lot of punctures but they seem to have found the problem there and he hasn't had one in quite a long distance.

If I remember correct the longest I've riden in a single day was about 100Km, so the Nullarbor is a bit beyond me. But I'd love to have that 'pig' fire for sure, if I could work out how to strap it to the bike

It packs away to quite a small unit but probably still too big for a bike.

They had a good time but are also pleased to be home. It was 'get there as soon as possible' with the parts and then they still didn't want to waste too much time getting back.

It's intriguing to learn about the accommodations they had during their journey—a tent with Vince on a camp stretcher and sleeping bag, and his brother opting for an air mattress. The mention of the 'pig' fire in their equipment piques curiosity, and the sight of flames shooting out the top hints at a chilly night. The custom-made trailer in the background adds an interesting touch to their setup.

Vince's brother has done a lot of camping in his time and has it all down to a fine art now.
