Reach for the stars

Western Australia (WA) is separated from the rest of Australia by the Nullarbor Desert. Because of this, we are free of some of the livestock and plant diseases and pests that affect the other states. There is a checkpoint on the border and all fruits and vegetables must be handed over before travellers come into WA. The desert is not all sand but there is very little vegetation and even fewer trees. The Eyre Highway is the only sealed road along the southern coast. It takes more than 24 hours to cross from east to west or vice versa so once all the lights are turned off the stars descend till they seem to be sitting just above. Vince took this photo using a time delay setting. As the earth moves on its rotation so the stars are that tiny bit blurry. He thinks it’s a crap photo; I think it’s great.

I do not think this is a crap photo, is beautiful as you can see how many stars we can see without the lights of too much civilization.

@JudyEv My husband used to take photos with a time exposure, they all are a bit blurry.

He doesn't like that the stars are a tiny bit blurry but you're going to get that with a time exposure.

Of course your opinion counts!! I think Vince is too picky sometimes. I can see the stars are a bit blurred but what the heck?

@JudyEv BeforeI moved to an apartment we used to sit out on the deck and look up at the stars, I can't see stars here, too many trees, although I love the trees.

Thanks. I like it even if the stars are a bit blurry. But you can't take such a time- exposure photo without getting a little bit of blur.

@LindaOHio It might be cause for concern if there were no blur!!

I think it's amazing, I've tried to get shots of stars I see but I've never seen that many where I am.

I checked and the Milky Way does appear in the northern hemisphere. Some of those in the lower right would be the Milky Way.

It's a big country but no bigger than America. Here's Australia imposed over America. They seem very similar in size.

It’s a great photo, but your stars look much different than our stars!

@JudyEv You’re in the Southern hemisphere and we’re in the Northern Hemisphere; hence we look at totally different stars when we gaze at the night sky!

@moffittjc I understand the arrangement would be different but I thought we were talking about the stars themselves.

One of the things I miss from our move is a view of the nightsky. I can see it here in town but not near so grand as when I lived in a more rural area.

You need a certain amount of darkness for the best night skies.

I love to see the stars, people nowadays just don't realise how deprived they are because they can live their whole lives without seeing more than a handful of stars. I often think how much more significant the stars must have been to people in the days before mass external lighting.

@JudyEv Sadly, I can believe that. We are so disconnected nowadays.

I read once that some children had never seen stars but I think that's probably a bit exaggerated. But no more than a handful I could accept. People would remark on the stars at our last property and I'd be a bit surprised. I just took them for granted mostly.
