Reach for the stars

Western Australia (WA) is separated from the rest of Australia by the Nullarbor Desert. Because of this, we are free of some of the livestock and plant diseases and pests that affect the other states. There is a checkpoint on the border and all fruits and vegetables must be handed over before travellers come into WA.
The desert is not all sand but there is very little vegetation and even fewer trees. The Eyre Highway is the only sealed road along the southern coast. It takes more than 24 hours to cross from east to west or vice versa so once all the lights are turned off the stars descend till they seem to be sitting just above.
Vince took this photo using a time delay setting. As the earth moves on its rotation so the stars are that tiny bit blurry. He thinks it’s a crap photo; I think it’s great.

@JudyEv I like the blur because it shows that we are moving.

It’s a great photo, but your stars look much different than our stars!

@JudyEv You’re in the Southern hemisphere and we’re in the Northern Hemisphere; hence we look at totally different stars when we gaze at the night sky!

@moffittjc I understand the arrangement would be different but I thought we were talking about the stars themselves.

I love to see the stars, people nowadays just don't realise how deprived they are because they can live their whole lives without seeing more than a handful of stars. I often think how much more significant the stars must have been to people in the days before mass external lighting.

I read once that some children had never seen stars but I think that's probably a bit exaggerated. But no more than a handful I could accept. People would remark on the stars at our last property and I'd be a bit surprised. I just took them for granted mostly.
