I didn't want to be left out! (And I need Advice)

The picture is one I took from the backyard of my dad's house a few years ago because my friend, Dominique, had asked what my dad's wife (Diana) was doing for her backyard. I couldn't find the other pictures I took. Diana loves gardening, so there are plants, flowers, bushes, fruits, and vegetables growing from every angle. Sometimes my dad has to remind her to come inside because of the heat, and she only started wearing gardening gloves after she married my dad, and he bought her some. She loves the outdoors. In the past, I would never ask this. However, since my dad married Diana he's actually started to give a darn about plants, and is so proud of how far the one Diana put him in charge of, has come. So I need your advice: what kind of plant, one that can be kept indoors, would be best to buy for my dad as a Father's Day present in June? I want one that isn't extremely hard to keep alive, and one that isn't super expensive (I simply don't have a lot of money). What ideas do you guys have? Is there a mylotter here who DOESN'T have a garden or plants they are taking care of?

If your dad has the room, go to Walmart and buy him one Elephant Ear bulb. They cost around $6 each and make a beautiful, but tall, houseplant. They are rated as outdoor plants but work well for houseplants, as well. If you lived close to me, I've got several pots of them and would just give you one to give to your dad.

I went and looked that up. It's a great idea! (And it's also pretty clear what a sweet person you are, too.)

@DaddyEvil Evil my foot. I live in central Oklahoma. I've been to Missouri a lot over the years. My family is addicted to Branson. And I do mean addicted. My sister also used to live in Ellsinore, right outside Poplar Bluff.

@AmbiePam Haven't you seen my name? Thanks. If you don't mind me asking, which state do you live in? I'm in the Southern part of Missouri.

Is there an area of the country that your Dad prefers? If so find some plants that are native to that area. Ferns are beautiful and he can easily split up a good sized fern so that he can plant some of it outside and keep some indoors. Our daughter-in-law has some ferns that she has to plant this weekend.

You know, that’s a good question. I’m not sure if he has a favorite part of the country. He’s more of the kind of person who gets enthralled in whatever place he happens to be in at the time. I might ask my sister if she’s ever noticed if he has an affinity for one particular place.

@AmbiePam Or if he has a favorite colour, like red, you could find a plant that has red leaves or blooms.

Maybe some kind of cactus. I’m really not a gardener. I just do my best to keep alive everything my daddy planted. He really had a green thumb.

Diana gave me a small aloe Vera plant five years ago, and it is the only plant I have ever managed to keep alive. I even killed the cactus I had when I was seven years old. I brought it on the school bus for show ‘n tell, and when the bus lurched my cactus went flying. I cried my eyes out the rest of the way to school. I’m pretty sure my dad would handle a cactus better.

My neighbor gave me a spider plant for Easter because it is extremely hard to kill. So far, it's healthy. I need to remember to water it.

I love coleus plants. When they are in the sun, they develop beautiful colors. Easy to care for. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

I would say sanseveria. Otherwise known as "mother in law's tongue", or "snake plant" There is a dwarf kind called Bird's nest. They have lots of shades of green and are very pretty. The upright ones can grow very tall. The root ball is small, so you do not have to keep getting bigger pots. They are tolerant of indoor light, and drying out does not daunt them. The only way I ever really injured one was growing it in a bathroom that had not enough heat. It does not do well with cold. Since they are succulent, they can do with less water. I think I need to get one. I have not had any in years.

@AmbiePam Same. Weeds don't require care. Hell, it's been bone dry, and our weeds survive on.

I'm a very bad gardener so i won't give you any advice on what to buy. However, I can tell you NOT to buy a cyclamen plant as they are very fussy indeed and seem to like dying. Here is my cyclamen. Very beautiful but alas, it is no more.

I'd suggest Pothos. Pothos is a popular choice for indoor plants due to its trailing vines and vibrant, heart-shaped leaves. It can tolerate different light levels and is relatively low-maintenance, making it a great option for your dad. I have a collection of plants at my workplace, and I'm excited to share their pictures with you tomorrow. As soon as I return to work, I'll post them in this comment for you to see.

Looks like @DaddyEvil has suggested the perfect plant. Any kind of Cactus are good, as well as Aloe Vera. Hard to kill for sure. I have Sedum in the garden. Started it on the deck. Easy peasy. Good luck.

I don't have one because much as I like to, the area and the circumstances do not allow it. What about a cactus for an inside plant? You could bring it out every morning for its dose of sunlight. I heard it's not hard to maintain.

I would suggest dieffenbachia a green plant with different shades of green that loves the indoors
The Dumb Cane plant is a strong little species that will thrive in any light conditions other than direct sunlight.
