A few years ago I had an appointment with my dentist for noon on a Friday, and at 10am that Friday I got a call that the dentist's sister went into labor, and would I mind coming in that coming Monday instead? She said the dentist felt bad about it so she'd give me free teeth whitening to make up for it. I was like, sure!
Today I had a six month cleaning, and after the X-Rays it felt like forever waiting for the dental hygienist to come in, but it was probably because I was having a hard time sitting upright with the pain in my body and all. When the dentist came in with the hygienist, she called out to the lady at the front desk to have a gift for me on my way out. She then asked about my dad, which was really sweet. She hadn't known he'd had 6 vertebrae replaced; she'd assumed it had been only a few.
When I got to the front to check out I had been there for an hour and a half, which wasn't bad, and left with a $5 gift card to Sonic, and a $5 gift card to Starbucks. I guess I'll need to start visiting those places! I would love for every doctor to give out something for running behind or having to put you off. They certainly aren't obligated to do that. She's a good lady, with really kind employees.

I’m not sure. My old dentist was great, but we switched because she was cheaper, and just as good. She’s actually not in my area technically (30 minute drive). I’ll just say outright that dentists in my area will charge you an arm and a leg because they know they can get away with it. My old dentist wasn’t a rip off like most around here, but he still kept his rates up. We stayed with him so long because bless his heart, when I needed a bridge during my mom’s dementia drama, he and his dental lab covered the cost themselves (I’ve never had dental insurance). They knew my dad would be stuck with the bill, and they knew he was struggling financially. So we rode with that dentist until we just couldn’t justify it financially anymore. I felt horrible about switching, but I think we expressed over the years how much we appreciated him.

@JudyEv I like the thought, but it is a thirty minute drive. I think I should probably start scheduling my appointments first thing in the morning before they get behind. I thought I was safe with a noon appointment. Does your dentist run behind, or is that an American thing?

I cannot imagine any doctors doing that here.

Wow! That's surely not the norm. All my dentist wants to do is schedule me for unwanted crowns. Enjoy and have a nice long weekend.

Yay, win, win! I wish all dentist's offices would do that.

Yeah not all are so kind hearted or good but some are.
Yet in some ways, personally I am beginning to be good or not so good case wise.
Else you know that some folks do take advantages!
Anyways enjoy your day !

They are not obligated to do so but still doing it to show that they care. And they own the responsibility of being late. I would call that a professional gesture. I am sure that it does help her build a good rapport with her patients.

Your doctor is a wonderful person to give gifts to their patients as a thank you for being their clients.
