Do any of you remember the Geo Storm make of car by Isuzu? My sister’s first car was a used, red, Geo Storm. It was labeled a compact car, but calling it compact was a kind way to put it. I remember when my sister was 16 she was on a break from college, and I (at 14) was on break too. We decided it would be fun to make the 2 hour drive to see my grandparents for lunch (gas was CHEAP then). My mom was home so we convinced her to come too. At sixteen, driving was still fun to my sister, so she sat behind the wheel, and out of respect, we had my mom ride in the front passenger seat. My sister is 5’6. My mother is 5’8. And ALL 5’11 of me had to crawl into that backseat. Halfway through the trip my sister and mom looked in the backseat, at me, and burst into laughter. My legs were too long to sit in a regular way. I had to sit sideways, with my legs spread across the back seat. “Whose idea was it to put the tall one in the back?”, I asked. It was the most uncomfortable I have ever been in my life! What is the most uncomfortable you’ve ever been riding in something for transportation?

I do recall sitting in a van with no heat for 4 hours in the winter...cramped because it was full of college students like myself. Your sister went to college at 16? She must be super smart. Also, when I was a teen we came down hwew to DC, and Virginia. Our car since we lived in NW PA had no AC. It is much too hot in DC/ Virginia to be without AC in the summer.

Yes, me and my sister both went to college when we were sixteen. She did go on to get her Bachelor degree at 19, and Masters at 21. I did NOT do that! Oh, A car in the summer with no AC...that's too much. I'm sure in Washington D.C. and Virginia it was unbearable.

@snowy22315 I never thought about the mountains having more of a breeze, but I guess they would; I love the mountains even more than the beach. Yes, I skipped two grades.

@AmbiePam It was bad, especially in DC since you couldn't get a good breeze going. Fortunately, when we got to the mountains it was much better. Interesting you and sis both graduated early! Did you skip a grade?

At least it makes for a good story. My older brother bought a used Volkswagen Beetle for his first car... There were six of us crammed into it once when we decided going to the lake for a swim was just the thing to do.

@AmbiePam It was very crowded and the day was hot... At least we all enjoyed the swim. The ride home was chilly since we were all wet.

When we returned from Germany we had a 12 hour drive to our new base. Daddy had to rent a car that was too small for our family and possessions. I had to ride the whole 12 hours with my baby brother who was 12 in my lap. I don’t know how I did it. One of my sister’s had our youngest sister in her lap.

Oh, good grief. Looking back, it’s amazing what we as kids get asked to do. It’s necessary, but tough!

For some reason, I didn't imagine you'd be 5'11". Isn't it funny how we get these preconceived notions?

Were you thinking closer to 5’5? I actually quit growing at the age of twelve. Every time I wore my school basketball shirt to the grocery store people asked what grade I taught.

@AmbiePam Yes, I was! We have such preconceived ideas about people and how old they must be because of how tall (or not!) they are.

I remember actually sleeping in the very back windshield of our huge Buick Electra 225 on trips. I was the shortest and the baby. The good ole days. Not really as uncomfortable as it was unsafe. But I survived.

The back seat of any car. I'm only 5.2, but I also have cereal palsy. So my legs don't want to bend the way they should. If I sit in any chair, that isn't my wheelchair, for more than a few minutes, I lose feeling in my legs.

Do people in your country have to be 18? We have to pass a written exam, and then an actual driving test in a car.

That's a pretty funny visual of you all stuck in the back seat of that little car. I'm sure your grandparents were happy to see you. Did you have to ride in the backseat on the way home too?

Oh my! I didn't know you were so tall. That would be very uncomfortable. My most uncomfortable was getting my pregnant self into the backseat of a Pinto. Getting out was fun too. (NOT). By the way, I had the baby the next day. I did not go to the hospital in the Pinto.

We once took a car trip to Lisbon to visit family, a journey of about 3 hours. It was winter and the air conditioning in the car was broken, it worked in the cold and it was not possible to turn it off. I don't know if it was colder inside or outside the car.

It was many years ago when my in-laws wanted us to go to Michigan with them. We wanted to take 2 cars since we had luggage and a 50-pound dog; but they insisted on us going in one car. Hubby and I sat in the back seat with a dog on our laps - it was uncomfortable and very hot with a dog on our laps.

Seated on my aunt's lap. When we were kids. I was 9 and had to sit on my aunt's lap because there were no longer seats available in the family van. I was a big girl so it was very uncomfortable for me.

That sounds like me when I rode from Washington state to Minnesota with my Mom and brother. He had a pretty good sized sedan but I couldn't get totally comfortable so like you, I spread out all over the back seat. One of my sisters had a Geo station wagon. We sure packed people in there one Christmas.
